Today will mark the end of Sear's presence in the entire tri-cities area. We shopped at Sears often when the store was open here in Bristol, but then it closed. We then did our Sears shopping in Kingsport until THAT store closed. Our last Sears store was the one that closes for the final time today.
It has been sad to watch Sears decline and fail. Although some of their brands, such as Craftsman tools will still be available at other retailers, I will truly miss shopping in their shoe department, and Kathy bought most of our linens and a lot of clothes there. I can remember when the Sangertown Mall store sold furniture. We bought a sectional sofa there years ago, and the sporting goods department in that store stretched half way across the back wall of the store.
If I go into my woodshop, the Craftsman name is visible in every direction. My table saw, radial arm saw, drill press, miter saw, and bench grinder all sport the Craftsman label. My lawn tractor, walk behind self propelled mower, and chipper shredder are all Craftsman products. Many of my hand tools are also Craftsman.
The saving grace is that all of those products are made by someone other than Sears themselves, and will be available from one outlet or another. We will just have to shop around. The one stop shopping will not be as easy to find. I was sad when Montgomery Ward in the Riverside Mall bit the dust, and now we are saying goodbye to Sears. The nearest store for us will now be 2 1/2 hours away, in Winston Salem NC, and that will probably be closing at some point in the future as Sears stores cease to exist.
Other big box stores such as Lowes and Home Depot have take over the market for lawn and garden equipment, and appliances, both of which were mainstays that kept Sears at the top of the retail world for many years. Where is the nearest Sears store in the CNY area now? Is there still a Sears store anywhere within easy driving distance?
