165,000 cars in one day? I was there a about a week before Christmas to pick up some embroidered towels that Kathy had ordered as gifts, and a gift for Kathy that I saw on sale at Bed Bath and Beyond. The police had placed red cones all over the place and were directing traffic flow. There was a sign out on Rt 11W telling thru traffic to use the left lane, and the right lane was stop and go with traffic going into the shopping area. There is a four lane road running the length of the development, and normally there are 4 places that you can turn left into parking areas for the various stores. The day I was there all those left turns were blocked, and cars had to go the far end to enter the parking areas and work your way back to the specific parking area for the stores you wanted to shop at. I had to park and walk quite a distance to the stores that I visited, and when I went to leave I was going to grab a coffee at McDonalds, but could not get to it without going back out onto the highway and re-entering the shopping center again. Needless to say I skipped the coffee stop, haha. From the time I came out onto the four lane service road until I was able to turn onto Rt 11W again was over 15 minutes of stop and go.
That was a week before Christmas. I can't even imagine what traffic was like on the day before Christmas, or on the day after Christmas when people began the exchange are return ritual.
The fact that it is very visible from the interstate, and directly adjacent to an exit, has made it a destination for shoppers from NE Tennessee and SW Virginia, as well as for travelers passing through on I-81. The shopping opportunities are much like the area in New Hartford at the junction of 840 and Commercial Drive except the traffic flow is much less complicated better engineered.
The traffic in the shopping area in New Hartford was probably similar but with the multiple entrances and exits from several directions it would be nearly impossible to track the numbers.
I am just glad that holiday shopping is over. We have just one little shopping expedition to make today. Kathy wants to buy wrapping paper and thegift bags for her pumpkin breads that she bakes for everyone and she always finds them half price after Christmas. We have to hit that narrow window before they put them away and break out the Valentines stuff.
We may drive to Johnson City to the last few days of the going out of business sales at the last Sears store in the area. It closes on the fifth. If the parking lot is not too crowded I may just stop in to see if there is anything left that is worth buying. I imagine that it is a picked over mess by now. Probably will stop by the Mountain Home National Cemetery to visit my buddy John's grave. He was a great friend. He passed away in March and I still think of him daily and miss hanging out with him.
