www.pauladeenmagazine.com/hoppin-john-recipe/Hoppin John is a traditional New Years dish for some that live here in the South. A neighbor brought us some a few years ago on New Years day and it was delicious. I made it last year using Paula's recipe and it was very good but if I were to make it again I would lighten up on the hot jalapeno peppers. If you use the Rotelle tomatoes with hot pepper in them you will probably find it spicy enough with only one or two jalapenos. While it is a New Years tradition, Hoppin John is a great dish to prepare on any cold winter day when a hot soup is warranted. Ladled over steamed white rice it makes a tasty and substantial entrée. I also enjoyed it on it's own in a bowl like soup or stew. This year we contemplated making it again, and settled instead on a pan of baked ziti with Italian sausage and lots of mozzarella cheese accompanied by a nice salad and crusty Italian bread.

I can't eat jalapenos since they trigger my Hiatal Hernia. Don't want that attack again. I mage Hoppin John several years ago and it is good. I didn't put and hot peppers in it.
