I always admired Carter as a decent, honest man, someone to be admired. He takes a lot of heat over his Presidency but I believe his intentions were good.

I am sure that his intentions were good. His performance once in office is up for debate. I voted for him. No matter who we elect, they are going to have strong points and weaknesses. Jimmy Carter and his wife were very focused on humanitarian issues and made great strides in that area. He may have just been TOO nice of a man to deal with some of the other issues facing the country at the time. I think that he thought that he had the knowhow to govern the country as a result of being governor of Georgia. He and the his "Georgia mafia" of influential southern politicians and supporters soon found out differently.
His successes included establishing the department of energy and department of education. He is also to be credited for the Camp David Accords. I am sure that there were many more successes to his credit.
His failures included the failed Iranian hostage rescue attempt that cost us about 30 lives and was not successful. If I remember correctly, it wasn't until Reagan was in office that the hostages were freed. Another major failure was the Carter Doctrine, warning the Soviets if they invaded Afghanistan it would be taken as a direct threat to US national security. Much like Obama's "line in the sand." We had Roosevelt speaking softly and carrying a big stick, and then we have had Carter and Obama speaking loudly and carrying a pool noodle.
They all have their successes and failures. Carter failed to get the Iranian hostages released, but Reagan did it as soon as he was inaugurated. He freed the Iranian hostages, but then he failed and cut and run when a couple of hundred people were killed in the bombing of our embassy in Beirut and he didn't answer with any serious retaliation against Hezbollah who are just another faction of Iranian terrorists.
There was Lyndon Johnson who was noted for the passing of the civil rights act and voting rights act during his presidency.
His biggest failure that resulted in many STILL suffering the after effects was the Vietnam war. 58 thousand plus lost their lives in that war, and agent orange victims still die daily.
Of all who have served in the Whitehouse I think that most will agree that Jimmy Carter was probably the most laid back and condescending of southern gentleman in modern history. His failures will be out shined by his humanitarian accomplishments that have occurred SINCE his time as president.
