www.facebook.com/vinnysinisi/videos/2677295625615990/The fact that Google and Facebook can sway votes in one direction or another is scary enough, but the fact that there is presently no way to even know if they are doing it or not is truly a matter for concern. Between 4 and 10 million votes is a significant number. We are worried about the Russians and the liberal social media is capable of having as much or more influence on the outcome of an election.

I would worry more about the people who are so swayed by social media to even believe their hype. I tend to think that they are those who never read a newspaper or watch the news on TV. I know some like that and I believe they are many. Those are most likely the 4 to 10 million or more.

The guy lost me when he started with the subliminal messaging jazz. Gimme a break. That crap was debunked years ago. Oh & a company owned by Google was Hillary's main contributor. So what? Sheldon Adelson casino owner, multi billionaire gave Trump $20 million dollars. Should we investigate why a casino owner gave the Trump campaign a cool $20 million? Hillary lost the election. People like Cruz should get over it, like the majority of Americans have. Cruz & his ilk should find another bright shiny object besides Hillary to distract from the crap that's going on right under our noses, which they all make excuses for. In the last election i voted for neither candidate because i have no use for either Clinton or Trump. And i sure as hell didn't donate money to Clinton's Senate campaign in N.Y. like Trump did.

I didn't mean the post to be partisan BHU. It just strikes me as a bit scary IF the social media giants CAN manipulate figures and votes in favor of ANY candidate in ANY Race. I use Facebook constantly, and realize it's shortcomings and security risks. I had never given any thought to the use of it to subliminally coaxing anyone to vote or to manipulate that vote.
As far as who contributed what to whom, it is an equally weighty issue for either party. Personally I find it rather appalling that so many millions of dollars are spent on campaigns that could be much better used to aid someone in need rather than chartering busses and aircraft, and flying to every hick town and major metropolis in the country to spread their false promises and political rhetoric. I am sorry if I offended anyone. It was not my intent. My mind was not focused on the tired subject of the 2016 election results. That has been kicked around more than enough.
What drew my attention was not the professor's reference to "subliminal messages." It was just a reminder that subliminal or not, these social media giants DO have the power to covertly sway opinion and do so on a daily basis. They can influence opinion by simply steering debate in the direction they happen to favor through the used of memes, cookies, and their inherent right and ability to censor or delete comments at will. Whether deliberately and mindfully, or unwittingly and without knowledge, the influence on users is increasingly obvious. As a matter of established fact, subliminal messages are a very real phenomena. The very premise of everyday advertising depends on focusing the potential customer's mind on the product being promoted.

Clipper, I wasen't offended by your post. Not at all & I wasent going after you in my post. I also use FB & most of the political stuff on their I pay no attention to. Both sides use that site to influence votes to think & vote a certain way & Cruz's self righteous rant accomplished nothing except as a dog whistle for his followers & the far right. Before Cruz goes after Google he should look in the mirror because he used that hearing to accomplish the same thing he went after Google for, only in a different way.
You may be right about the subliminal message issue. I thought it was nonsense, but I'm sure there's something to it.

You are correct about Cruz's intent. My interest was aroused by the professor more so than Ted Cruz. I have followed the hearings and the inquiry, but am not one of those glued to the screen. I have popped in an out while channel surfing and listened for a few minutes, depending on who was testifying or speaking. I have actually found the coverage to be a pain in the ass for the most part. To be honest I was pissed that they pre-empted regular programming for hours at a time. I would have much rather gotten a summation of the day's events on the 6:30 national news.

Yesterday I was watching a show and a professor who studies voting was telling the host that Google and FB would gather info of all Democrats and they would post in their news feed (just for them) reminders to make sure they went out and voted. They directed subliminal suggestions to them. This was like millions of notices. This would greatly influence and interfer in the voting process. This was when Hillary was running or prior. Who polices these people yet they talk about Trump. I know FB can't be trusted and have heard that Google and Yahoo have always read our emails and gathered data.

I'm not sure what the problem is with social media sites urging people to vote. After all, it is our civic duty. Most people don't bother & that is a shame. Hundreds of thousands of our young have been maimed & died in wars defending The Bill of Rights, The Constitution & our Democratic way of life. Citizens should get off their butts & vote no matter what their political affiliation is.

I have always that if a person needs a reminder to vote, he hasn't looked into it enough to make an informed decision. He will just vote on whether there is an R or D associated with the name.
