New York law raising age to buy tobacco goes into effect ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York has now raised the minimum age to buy tobacco and electronic cigarettes to 21 years old, from 18. The law goes into effect Wednesday, Nov. 13. Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the goal is to prevent addictive cigarette and vaping products from getting to young people. The New York Department of Health says nearly 40 percent of 12th grade students and 27 percent of high school students are now using e-cigarettes. They say the increase is largely driven by flavored e-liquids. www.syracuse.com/state/2019/11/new-york-law-raising-age-to-buy-tobacco-goes-into-effect.htmlI bet there are a lot of 18, 19, 20 year olds who went to buy a pack this AM and got screwed. LOL

Show of hands, when the age to buy was 21 how many of us knew someone in high school who smoked or drank beer? My son started smoking when he was 13. He did manage to quit a few years ago but it wasn't easy.
My not quite 16 year old granddaughter has already been busted for vaping in the girls room at school.
Banning week didn't stop people from using. Legalizing it means more people drive high and now we can buy expensive new tech for an MJ breath test.
I'll bet every 18 year old has a friend who can legally buy.
Not sure what my point is. Perhaps for the good of the species we should let natural selection take place.

I started smoking at around 14 yrs old. If stores would not sell cigarettes to kids, there was always a place to buy them from a vending machine. When I lived in Whitesboro in the late 50's a friend and I would stop and buy cigarettes from a machine at a laundromat on our way to school and Whitesboro high school had a designated smoking area as did most local high schools. I finally quit smoking in 2004.
Kids will get their cigarettes one way or another if they want to smoke. Beer was easy enough to get also. We used to pay a kid that was big enough and mature enough looking to buy beer. We would get a six pack or two and take it down to the coal sheds by the tracks in Whitesboro where we would smoke our cigarettes and drink a beer or two. When I first moved to N. Utica I worked for a farmer who used to buy us beer when we would help him put in hay. We could buy 3 quarts of UC, Genny, or a beer called Topper for a dollar. When I was in my senior year in school at West Canada Valley we used to pile in a car on a Friday or Saturday night and go to Dolgeville to a bar on the outskirts of town that served minors. One Saturday night the basketball coach went there and found the entire basketball team drinking under age. He canned them all from the team and we ended up with a varsity basketball team made up of freshman and sophomores.

When I turned 21, my brother and many of our fiends were 19-20. I was the designated buyer.

The drinking age was only 18 in NY when I reached 18. I also became the buyer for a few underaged high school parties. Looking back I guess we are fortunate that nobody was every injured or killed as a result of a drunk driving accident leaving us standing in front of a judge, negligent in contributing to the death.
Two other guys in my senior class turned 18 the same day I did. We skipped school for the afternoon and celebrated in all the local bars. I got so drunk that a very large, in charge, rather homely girl in our hometown, half carried me to our front porch, rang the bell, and turned me over to my dad to assist my drunk ass into bed. My dad later wondered what was frozen on top of the pile of fireplace wood. My bed was right next to a window and I was so drunk I tossed my cookies out the window onto the woodpile. I wonder if their next cozy fire smelled a little like second hand pizza, beer, and peppermint schnapps.

I never started smoking till I was 25 years old. Have no idea why I did that. I probably could have traveled back and forth to Europe a few times. Same thing with drinking alcoholic beverages not till 25.

A few days ago I was talking to an employee of the local vape shop that I frequent. According to him N.Y. has backed off on the ban of flavored vape juice for now. The state is "studying the issue". Gee, I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that NY is raising the tax on vape products come December? Follow the money.

I don't understand why the products are not tested for safety. Anything that has an effect has side effects. Nicotine and alcohol are both known toxins.
Speaking of young and stupid, when I was stationed in Germany we bought a bottle of Algerian red wine because it was cheap. It was so bad even GIs couldn't drink it. So we put it in a water pipe and smoked it.

I know an Army vet our age that bought some cheap home made wine in Germany in the 60's that was supposed to be stronger than the commercial wines. He and his friends bought a gallon of the wine and partied until it was gone. They all fell ill and ended up in the ER at the base hospital. The wine was found to contain Formaldehyde. Nothing like embalming yourself before ya die.
When I was stationed in Long Beach California we used to drink a cheap Vin Rose' called Red Mountain Vin Rose'. It was only about $6 for a gallon jug. It was made with the recycled grape skins left over from making a quality wine. I guess they added some sort of chemicals to re-ferment the stuff. It was a head busting hangover in a jug. Looking back I think that it probably was not worth putting in a water pipe. I had some friends that smoked weed. They once smoked their weed through a water pipe filled with Japenese Acadama plum wine and when they were done smoking they drank the wine. I can't even imagine what that tasted like, haha.
