The first time I entered a line of code I had written into a computer was during the summer of 1964 however I don't consider myself an "expert." I am a user with some knowledge of hardware and software.
I described earlier the event I had on Halloween during which my computer lost all of its bookmarks and most of the desktop shortcuts. The scariest part was that I temporarily access to my Bad Joke file. That's years of humor. I had it on my One Drive but temporarily lost access to that. As an added blow this computer will not recognize my external hard drive.
Yesterday I recovered access to Bad Jokes (it was still on my hard drive but I could not access it until I entered a PW). I also recovered and saved many of my book marks. This morning they are all gone again.
I will run both Malwarebytes and Avast. Then I will takeanother step but I don't know what that is yet.
Just this morning Barb asked me if I was interested in a Chromebook. Never considered one before. Does anyone have any experience?

Thanks for the info. I have been reviewing my current computer needs. These days I use my laptop mostly to go online and some word processing. I have the full version of MS Office installed but mostly I use Word. I don't really need anymore for spreadsheets or data bases. I could probably get by with the free on-line versions. I did find that most of the missing files were backed to One Drive.

"I have the full version of MS Office installed but mostly I use Word" Not on a Chomebook. Do you havean Android phone? Similar. Bassically boots into Google Chrome, useful for anthing done online.
You have One Drive? Windows 10?. Try the recovery options. Settings>Update and Security>Recovery>Restet this PC Keep your personal files! It sounds like you have backup, just in case...

I see my lack of typing skills have betrayed me again! Hope you get a laugh, but the basics are correct. Windows 10 has great recovery/reinstall options. I have directed a few friends to Chromebooks, but go in with your eyes open!

Thanks Dave S, good suggestions. I have used other office suites going back to Enable in the 80s so the thought of learning a new system doesn't scare me. I think I can practice the Google apps on my Samsung tablet.
I tend to save everything so I am sure I have a lot of stuff I no longer need.
I have a RCA tablet with a keyboard which I bought for the grandkids. I can probably use that to see how comfortable I am with the Google apps and how easy it is to import a document in the docx format.
Check on making sure everything is backed up. If I buy anything it will probably be the last purchase on anything bigger than a tablet so I intend to move slowly.

I had one of those RCA tablets with a detachable keyboard. I think I paid $100 for it when Kathy was in the hospital at Wake Forest for one of her 6 back surgeries. When my son gave me my Ipad I gave the little RCA tablet to my buddy John who has since passed away. He had photos and stuff on there. His sister asked me when John died if I wanted it back. I told her with the photos on there that she could take it. She also wanted to know if we wanted the 2002 minivan back. It was only worth a few hundred bucks so we told them that they could give it to a young couple with kids that was struggling and had a car that kept breaking down. It is still running strong and they are enjoying it. At least it is a reliable ride to work. It was always well maintained.
I never quite learned how to do much with the android tablet. Just did email and accessed the forum and facebook when we were traveling.
