If I remember correctly the groups that want this change in bail claim that it is discriminatory against poor blacks, Latinos, Hispanics and other minorities. Hard to argue against that when our jails are over represented by those whom this new law is to address.
I am totally against driver licences for ILLEGAL aliens and free college for immigrants( make it free for everyone but only in State run institutions) even though I do not really feel it should be free.

In my opinion, if you can't afford bail, don't do the crime. A simple theory obviously not subscribed to by all.

I think it needs to be addressed at the legislative level. I have some serious concerns about the law from the reports I have read. The timelines seem to have been pulled out of the air.
From what I read, if a presumed rapist is arrested and it takes 15 days for the lab report to come back, the DNA evidence can't be used at trial. If I am misunderstanding I would like to be corrected.
Oneida County got hosed in the last redistricting. We used to have 2 representatives. Now we have one district which includes Rome and the Democratic portions of Utica with a narrow strip along Rt 49 and the rest of the county is divided among several districts. I live in a district shaped like a snake which runs from New Hartford almost to Newburgh. The current rep is from New Hartford and I'm sure he had no voice on this bill. I have not heard anything from the Utica rep.

Personally I was never a big proponent of redistricting, to begin with. I am sure that there was a lot of strictly partisan political influence involved in drawing the lines. the new map looks like a disjointed jigsaw puzzle.

Nothing good is going to come of this at all. It's not a matter of if, it's going to happen on the 1st of the year unless something is done to cause it to stop. Already signed and sealed, just awaiting the New Year.

The census will happen next year. After the counting, the number of representatives each state will have will be adjusted. Some will gain, others will lose. The districts within each state are required to be roughly equal in population. The way the districts are drawn can cause a lot of controversy.
In the 60s the Supreme Court ruled that state legislatures also had to be roughly equal in population. Lawsuits about how they are drawn go on forever. I think the districts in North Carolina have been ruled illegal, but that probably won't be settled before the next census.
