One of my neighbors knew that I have been looking for a deal on a wood chipper so he told me about one he saw today at an estate sale. I went straight over to the sale. It is a Craftsman chipper that has only been used twice and then only to mulch leaves. It is only a couple of years old and there is not so much as a mark in the paint in the chute. They wanted $120 and I bought it for $90. They had an upright freezer there that is also like brand new. They wanted $150 and I got it for $100. The sale ran last weekend and is running this weekend so prices are pretty negotiable. It is the estate of an elderly couple, one of which is deceased and the poor spouse that had to go into a nursing home. Kathy is going with me tomorrow to look at the kitchen set. The house is in an affluent neighborhood, and everything in the house is high quality and well took care of. There is a beautiful 5 piece pit group sectional sofa in the living room that looks as though no one has ever sat on it, and they only want $800 for it. It cost over $2000 two years ago according to the couple's daughter. She said they always sat in the family room and seldom used the living room.
My neighbor across the road that is in the antique and used furniture business is going to go with me and move it on his box truck equipped to move furniture. I would be afraid it might tip over trying to haul it standing in the back of my pickup.

We went and picked up the freezer and chipper this morning. I dropped the chipper right off to my small engine guy to have him change the oil, and gas, clean the carb and get it running. I hadn't been started in 2 yrs I guess. They found the manual that came with it and the receipt was in the bag. It was bought in 2016 and the son was there today and said that he and his dad had only chipped some branches and shredded leaves with it. Then after that first year, it sat in the cellar/garage because the old man hired a lawn service to take care of everything.
I brought the freezer home and put it in the garage. All I had to do is wipe the outside down with a spray cleaner and wipe the inside out with bleach and soapy water. There isn't so much as a scratch on the outside and the inside was as clean as a whistle but Kathy wanted to disinfect it. It was purchased at Lowes on the 4th of July of 2016. The manual and receipt for that were also taped to the outside in a clear plastic bag.
My neighbor that went with me bought a stairway lift while he was there. It is one of those chairs that rides up and down a stairway on a rail. His wife has Rheumatoid arthritis and can't do stairs very well. $250 and they would disassemble it. He will have to hire someone to reinstall it and wire it in his house. They cost in the thousands new.
It is sad to see a couple's entire life's goods with little orange tags on them. All the memories and history being sold for next to nothing. Today was half price for all the small stuff and there were people buying stuff by the carboard box full. I remember watching my mom and dad's things go down the driveway when we had the estate sale. I saw stuff that had been around since my childhood, but neither I nor my brother and sister had any use or desire to keep it. The day we locked the door on the house and walked away all three of us cried. I kept photos and tools and let the rest go. My sister took Christmas decorations and a few of my mom's clothes.

It's sad. When my Mom passed away a few years ago the only thing I took was a table that the wife & I gifted her for her birthday one year. She used it to display pics of the grandkids & other family members. We still have it. My brothers & sisters shared whatever else they wanted. We sold the house. I had a key & a few days before the closing i went in to look things over, the place was empty & I sat on the floor & cried like a baby. That was 10 years ago. Every once in a while I drive past the house & the owners are taking good care of it, which is a good thing.

They saved me a box full of photos which was thoughtful. When Barb's Mom passed away the only thing she wanted was a warm fuzzy bathrobe her Mom had worn. Barb still wears it on cold mornings. I think it makes her feel closer to her Mom. Barb has an on going project sorting through decades of photo albums and putting them into boxes for each of our kids,

I can relate to Barb's photo sorting project. I have two plastic totes full of photos to sort through. Some to my boys, some to keep, and others to share with my brother and sister. I may trade some of the OLD family photos for some of the later photos. My brother and sister have lived here near mom and dad since the 70's and both have been taking pictures for all of those years while I was still in NY. I don't have many photos that were taken in later years.

One family photo that has been circulating among us is of my grandfather and his siblings (6 brothers and a sister) standing around their mother (sitting in a chair). My understanding is that it was a gathering of the family after she was diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately no one labeled the photo and we can't figure out which brother is which.
Also I think if my sons were dressed in suits of that period they would fit right in with the group.
