lite987.com/should-speeding-be-legalized-in-central-new-york/The entire concept of having a lane on the Thruway for people that pay to go 80 or 85 mph is absolutely ridiculous. They have a hard enough time maintaining the lanes that they have now. I guess that the wrecks that occur on the Thruway now are not violent and deadly enough.

One of the most dangerous situations on a multilane highway is people traveling at different speeds. Also my general observation is that people who drive at 80 or above can't do the arithmetic to determine a safe following distance.
A car at 50 mph is traveling 88 fps. If brake lights come on in front of you and you have normal reaction time, you will apply your brakes in 1/4 second. That is 22 feet. If you are distracted, older or impaired in any way that time and distance can go way up.
At 75 mph you travel 122 fps. The braking distance goes up by 50%. The kinetic energy if there is a collision goes up by 225% .
