Oh well it is time for me to buy a new mattress and box spring. This one has served me well for 50 years and now every morning I get up my back aches like hell and it takes 20 minutes to straighten up. LOL. This is confusing so I hope my sister will help since I never did this before and looking around on the internet at stores in Utica buying a mattress is confusing. So many types and styles.

P- Check out a good quality mattress topper to put on your mattress. They are a lot cheaper than a new mattress, and, help quite a bit.

How'd you manage to make a mattress last for 50 years? Joe Tahan's has some pretty good deals on mattresses, but I would avoid the off brands. Sealy, Simmons, Beauty Rest are some that have been around for years & make a quality product. Good luck & do your research, but there's nothing like hands on especially for a mattress. I would not buy a mattress online, no way.

I agree that it is a very difficult purchase. Going to a matress store and test driving it for 5 minutes has no relationship to what it will feel like after 8 hours sleep. Do you want just a mattress or also a new box spring? Deal with a company which does both setup and take away. Accept that you have only 10-15 years to sleep on it.

Our mattress in the camper was not very good but we put a 4 inch memory foam topper on it and it is quite comfortable. The price depends on the size of the bed and the thickness of the foam you buy. I don't remember what we paid for the camper, but the king-size for our bed in the house was $105.

Thanks for the information. I have to check into a mattress topper. The mattress and box spring I have now is a Sealy and it has lasted a long time with constant rotation. I should have tossed it 20 years ago but......
Ya I will also need a box spring. I have checked Joe Tahan's. Good prices.

The full bed and bedroom set which consists of dresser, long mirrored dresser and nightstand with a head board like a book case. It might be 60 years old my Mom got it from one of her brothers.

They put a bit of prime wood and craftsmanship into furniture in those days PB. We have a set in our spare room that belonged to Kathy's mom. The bed is just as steady as it was when it was built, and the dresser and night stand have solid wood drawers with dovetails and birch bottoms rather than thin plywood. The mattress and box spring are long gone. When we bought the king mattress as a set, it came with a "foundation" that was nothing more than a padded piece of plywood. We paid extra to get actual box springs. The only drawback is that the thickness of the premium pillow top mattress combined with the height of a box spring would leave a short person having to stand on a stool to see over the top of it, hahaha. ( actually it is comes to just below my waist.)
Prices sure have changed. I hope that you are able to find a suitable and comfortable set at Joe Tahan's PB. I bought furniture there when he was in the old mill building in Rome and old Joe himself sold it to us. Decent quality, and very reasonable prices. It wasn't too many years ago that I bought a queen-sized Simmons set for about $350. The king-size set we purchased 3 or 4 years ago here was over $800. They really have you by the short hairs. A decent mattress is critical to a decent night's sleep which in turn affects your entire overall physical wellbeing. There have been times when we have stayed in a hotel and I woke up barely able to hobble to the bathroom. I spent an entire ten-day period on such a mattress at a LaQuinta Inn in Winston Salem once while Kathy was hospitalized for one of her back surgeries. It would take me until mid morning to limber up to the point of being comfortable and pain free. It was the main reason that we started taking the travel trailer over there for her last two surgical procedures.

This bedroom set is very sturdy and the drawers inside are lined with cedar wood. I used to have a very nice 4 poster mahogany bedroom set that was my Great Grandfathers then Grandfathers then he gave it to me. It was extremely heavy and very well built. When I moved from Syracuse to Utica I couldn't afford to have it moved so I sold it to an antique place for about $500. I saw a set almost like it at Macy's I think many years ago for almost $2,000.!

I wonder if a person can even buy a dresser solid cedar lined drawers any more. I bought such a dresser once when I was single. I bought it used from a second-hand furniture place on Bleecker St. I hated the fact that it made my clothes smell like cedar. I personally don't like the smell of cedar. My grandmother's chest of drawers and closets always smelled either of cedar or mothballs, haha. We do however have the solid cedar chest that was my mom's hope chest before she married my dad. It is at the foot of our bed and has a cushion on top where we sit to put on our socks. It contains extra blankets and comforters, but you can't smell the cedar unless it is opened.

LOL. It cracks me up how fast the cookies and pop-up ads jump up when you have viewed something. I am still bombarded with the tire ads from when I searched tire deals a while back.

To be honest, I think with beds/mattresses, you do get what you pay for. If you can and are able to, I’d save for a proper spring mattress from a reliable make and combine it with the suggested base. We have a sprung mattress that sits on top of a box that has a thinner spring mattress on top of it. Although the initial outlay is high, you will get decades of good use out of it. If you choose well, you’ll have good sleep and wake without the aches and pains you can get sleeping in some beds.
