How Do You View America - The Nationalist Vs The Compact Theory
I was listening to Rev. Connor a Historian who teaches Church History on the graduate level at Mount St Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland . He brought up this question and I must have forgotten most of it so I have been looking around and found this. The program airing now is not yet up on the internet as soon as it is I will post it. Fascinating topic
One of the biggest clashes that many people have is not left vs. right or Democrat vs. Republican. It is the Nationalist vs. The Compact View of the Union. Though many may not be familiar with the terms, many have already planted their flag in one of these camps when viewing America.
The Nationalist's say that the Federal Government is supreme and the States have very little say in the American Political Arena. The Compact Theorists argue that not only do the states have a say, they are entitled to their sovereignty when dealing with issues concerning things within their domain and concerning their citizens. This fight has been raging since before the ink was even dry on the Constitution. So, what does history say? That was the topic for this month, the analysis of the Nationalist vs. the Compact view of our Nation in an historical context.

Now here it is the great Father Charles Connor on EWTN Live. Fascinating discussion.
Fr. Charles Connor shows how the the tumult and tragedy of the Civil War forged a new Catholic Identity in the United States of America. Hosted by Fr. Mitch Pacwa.
Enjoy

I would have to identify with the theorists when it comes to state's rights to govern when it comes to many issues such as education areas where federal interference is not wanted or needed. There are also areas where State government is overly intrusive and where local government should rule and prevail.
I personally believe that Federal intervention should be confined to issues that pertain to the entire nation as a whole. Issues that affect only a small segment and are confined to a smaller area of the country should be at the discretion of the appropriate lower level of government.

I think the Federal should only have power dealing with the mail and war. Other than that all else should be done by individual States who can delegate certain powers to local governments.

Sounds like a plan PB but it would take a whole lot of amendments and changes to return all that power and responsibility to the states. If they started today we would never see much progress in our lifetimes. Politicians have feathered themselves a comfy little nest and have the rest of the country at their mercy

So many issues are local rather than national. I can't see Congress getting involved in zoning or trash pick up or flood control on the Sauquoit Creek. Things like highways or Air Traffic Control extend beyond local or state interests.
