I was just watching a news report that brought to light a unique problem that hasn't been noted following hurricanes in recent years.
Abaco Island has been completely flattened. There is no rebuilding. The island has to first be cleared of debris and the unique problem arises when there is no place on the island to dispose of it. I assume it will all have to be hauled away on barges and dumped somewhere or piled up and burned. I would bet it will probably be in the US that is on the receiving end of whatever they haul off of the island. Looking at the photos and reading the stories, I have to wonder if the island will ever recover enough to be home to those who lived there again.
Even with the destruction left by Katrina, at least it was on the continental US where the debris could be taken away in trucks and disposed of in landfills or burned. In the case of Abaco Island, there is absolutely no place to put it, and the entire island is covered with debris.

Be better to just leave everything there undisturbed and count the island as a huge loss. One thing for sure I hope all the junk is not tossed into the ocean. I read where some islands are under water.
