The 30 most dangerous places in Upstate NY, according to latest FBI crime data
By Ben Axelson | baxelson@nyup.com | Posted April 02, 2019 at 06:16 AM | Updated April 02, 2019 at 05:03 PM
Every year, the FBI publishes crime counts for every town, city and village police agency in the country, including data on murder, rape, robbery, burglary and more. The 2017 data, which is the latest available, breaks crime into two categories--violent crime and property crime--and can provide a glimpse into which towns and cities suffer from higher crime rates than others.
Below, you can find the 30 most dangerous places in Upstate New York, based on crime data for the year 2017. Each place's population, total violent and property crime count and crimes per 10,000 residents are also listed, as well as its ranking on last year's list of "most dangerous places."
METHODOLOGY
We ranked the 30 most dangerous cities and towns with populations above 5,000 using a "crime score" by aggregating crime counts for each city. We standardized the number of crimes per location, then we weighed violent crimes at 80 percent and property crimes at 20 percent, as violent crime is often of greater concern to residents.
Note that this data does not consider many factors that make policing different from community to community, including degree of urbanization, economic conditions, youth demographics, climate and more.
