Church burglary is quite prevalent in this area of NE Tennessee. One thing I noticed immediately when we first moved here was that on every corner was either a church or a bank.
I guess it is because we are in the bible belt, but just about everybody here goes to church several times a week. The church is the mainstay of not only their spiritual life, but also their social life. Many of the churches here have huge fellowship halls, gymnasiums, commercial kitchens, and above all, a wide variety of expensive musical instruments, sound equipment, and computers.
As for the large number of banks? I guess all the churches need a place to deposit all the money they collect. Tithing seems much more prevalent here than it was when I lived in upstate NY. Catholics used to pledge money to the church and would have envelopes given to them to put their collection money in. Protestant churches I attended would see some people putting a significant donation in the collection plate but a good many simply dropped a fiver or a ten in the plate. A large number of people here actually tithe a percentage of their income.
Churches have seemed to be a soft and easy target and because of that, most local churches have made major investments in high dollar and intricate security systems, alarming all windows and doors and cameras covering every area but the rest rooms.
I remember when I was a kid Catholic churches were always unlocked and open. It always was a place to seek refuge from the cold. I used to duck into the Old St Paul's in Whitesboro to get warm when walking home from school to our house on Westmoreland St. I wonder if those churches are still left open with the uptick in theft, and the amount of gold chalices, and other valuable and precious items such as candle holders, along with the run of the mill expensive sound systems and computers.
