NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ANNOUNCES $2.8 MILLION REHABILITATION OF ROUTE 8 BRIDGE OVER GENESEE STREET, VILLAGE OF NEW HARTFORD, ONEIDA COUNTY
Accelerated Construction Methods will Speed Work, Minimize Traffic Impacts
Public Information Meeting Set for Tuesday, July 17
New York State Department of Transportation Acting Commissioner Paul A. Karas today announced that work will begin this week on the rehabilitation of the Route 8 bridge over Genesee Street in the Village of New Hartford, Oneida County.
“Governor Cuomo is making sure that the state’s transportation infrastructure is better than ever,” Acting Commissioner Karas said. “This project is like many we’re doing across the state, strengthening a key bridge so that it can support business and travel locally and regionally for years to come.”
Route 8 is a major corridor for tourism and commerce between the Southern Tier and the Adirondacks, providing a vital connection to the City of Utica, the New York State Thruway and the Erie Canal.
Accelerated construction methods are being used to expedite construction and minimize disturbance to the traveling public. Without the accelerated construction technique, the project would extend into two construction seasons instead of just one. This project is scheduled to be completed this fall.
A public information meeting about the project will be held on Tuesday, July 17, 2018, at 7 p.m. at the Village of New Hartford Fire House, 4 Oxford Rd, New Hartford, NY 13413.
The bridge rehabilitation project will replace the bridge deck with a precast concrete bridge deck system. The precast deck elements will be linked by an ultra-high performance concrete bonding product, which will provide a high strength connection and accelerated cure times. Use of these products offer a highly durable result at a much quicker pace than other methods of construction.
The project will require a three-day road closure on the Route 8 bridge over Genesee Street and Genesee Street to allow for the safe placement of the concrete bridge deck. During the closure, tentatively scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday August 17, crews will work around the clock to return the bridge to service by 6 a.m. on Tuesday, August 21. The closure schedule is weather dependent.
Travel advisories will be published prior to the road closure advising motorists of temporary detours.
Shortening the project time line supports Governor Cuomo’s “Drivers First” initiative, which is designed to prioritize the convenience of motorists and ensure that traffic disruptions are as minimal as possible during highway and bridge construction projects across the state.
Senator Joseph Griffo said, “For the benefit of all New York residents and visitors, we need to make sure that our infrastructure is in the best shape possible. Projects such as the rehabilitation of the Route 8 bridge will help to modernize our roads, highways and bridges and will improve the safety of motorists and their families. This work also can help to drive economic opportunity in our region and our state.”
Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi said, “Over the past several years, the Department of Transportation has overseen a number of significant infrastructure projects that have transformed transportation in the Mohawk Valley region. Throughout this process, the DOT has done an excellent job coordinating these projects with little inconvenience to drivers. The DOT is again working with the public to make sure traffic flows as smoothly as possible during this much-needed rehabilitation of the Route 8 bridge. I want to thank the DOT for its outreach on this and other improvement projects here in the Mohawk Valley.”
Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in work zones and are urged to slow down, watch for construction workers and heed the direction of flaggers. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license.
Last month, NYSDOT and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee unveiled a new public service announcement and social media campaign focused on the importance of respecting flagging personnel. This year’s work zone safety campaign, “Flaggers have families too,” is designed to remind motorists that flagging personnel are not attempting to disrupt traffic – they are simply doing their jobs and want to get home safely at the end of each work day. The PSA can be viewed here and here.
