An easy recipe for pulled BBQ pork without watching it on a smoker all day. With summer weather here at last I will post the recipe one more time. Much easier to prepare than smoking the pork butt in a smoker and tending the fire all day.
Place a 5 lb pork butt in the crockpot fat side up.
Pour 2 cups of orange juice over it.
In a bowl mix an entire 16 ounce bottle of Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce, 2 tbsp. of yellow mustard and 1 cup of light brown sugar. If you want it to have a smokier flavor, put a tsp of liquid smoke in the sauce mixture. I personally don't bother. The BBQ sauce is smoky enough for my taste.
Set the crock pot on high and let it cook for 6-7 hours until it will shred when picked at with two forks.
Peel away any fat cap that has not melted down and throw it away
Put the pork butt in a bowl or on a platter and take two forks and shred it for sandwiches. Drizzle some of the cooking juices over the meat to keep it moist.
Take a tongs and place a good sized portion of the meat on a sandwich roll and drizzle with a bit more Sweet Baby Ray's if you care to.

For our Father's Day cookout yesterday, Barb put her home blend rub on pork ribs, put them on racks in a couple baking pans, covered with foil and put them in a low oven before church. We pulled them out in the afternoon and #1 son finished them on the grill. Very moist and tender and quite tasty.

That is the way we do ribs also CB. We rub them the night before and leave them in the refrigerator overnight. She puts them in a 250 degree oven for a spell, covered with foil. I take them out to the grill and brush them with sauce as they cook. Some people like their ribs "dry" with just the rub. I like mine sauced, brushed with sauce during the grilling and just before plating.
I don't have the patience any more for the all day process in a smoker. My oldest son has a Traeger smoker that he paid 6 or 7 hundred dollars for. He loves spending a weekend day smoking a brisket, chicken or ribs. It burns wood pellets made specifically for cooking.
I think that the best BBQ pork I ever ate was at a pig pickin' that we were invited to when we first moved here. They roasted a whole pig on a spit over an open fire, basted with a vinegar based Carolina style sauce, and when done the meat was pulled from the bones and placed on large sheet pans for serving. It was a great day. Everyone brought salads or a dish to pass, there was live blue grass music, horse shoes and volley ball, and those that drank had their moonshine. It was hosted by a couple we bowled with. They own a small factory that produces wheels for mining equipment and they have a house worth about 6 or 7 hundred thousand overlooking South Holston Reservoir.

I tried pulled pork BBQ when down in Richmond, Virginna. They grind up the final product. Didn't care for it. I did make this once at home and shredded the pork then served it with coleslaw on a hamburger bun. Didn't care for it. To chewy. I'll stick with my veggie burger on a bed spinach.

Just a matter of personal taste. I have tried Bubba Burgers a couple of times and was not at all fond of the veggie burger thing. If the pork is cooked until it falls off the bone it is not chewy or tough, and moistening the shredded meat with the juices from the crockpot insures that it is not dry.
Kathy isn't crazy about pulled pork BBQ either. If we go out for BBQ she orders baby back ribs or chicken.

Now i love baby back ribs and chicken. Applebee's used to sell BBQ baby back ribs that were very good. But haven't been there for some time now.

June 11th is the date set for the annual Laurey family baby back rib orgy, in our back yard. There will be 9 racks of ribs and 2 split chickens on the bbq, baked beans, potato and macaroni salads, apple sauce, hot corn bread with tiny pieces of jalapeno in the batter, plus, various assorted beverages. Dessert will be peach halves, sprinkled lightly with suger, grilled cut side down, and then, topped with French vanilla ice cream. This is not a heart healthy affair, as you can see, however, it is so seldom that we can get everyone together in one place, at the same time, that we figure "what the hell, once a year will not kill us."

I assume that you meant JULY 11th, not June. Wow, that menu sounds like a true food orgy for sure. I love cook-outs and BBQ baby backs are one of my favorites. I also miss the chicken BBQs that the fire departments and other organizations used to put on in the Utica and CNY area. Never had a bbq chicken that compared to Brook's BBQ from Oneonta. I do halves with the State Fair marinade occasionally but never get it to taste as good as the real thing from upstate NY. I will have to try the grilled peaches. I have grilled apple slices and pineapple slices with sugar or sugar and cinnamon sprinkled on them. The peaches sounds really good. Who doesn't like peaches and vanilla ice cream.
We are attending a cook-out at Kathy's aunt's camp at Canadarago on the 4th, and will most likely have a cook-out at my son's camp at Lewis Point while we are there. Enjoy your family gathering. I wish my kids were not scattered to the winds so we could do that sort of thing more often.

Here is a recipe for crockpot Asian style ribs that I recently tried. They used boneless ribs but I used regular St Louis style with the bones. The only change I made to the recipe was to add a pinch or two of crushed red pepper for a little extra pizzazz. Sweet, tender, finger licking good. I love stuff done on a grill or in a smoker, but for an easy no fuss bbq dinner the crockpot has become my best friend.

Clipper- You are correct. It's on July 11th. Old age creeping up on me at 77 years!

LOL! It didn't creep up on me. It roared out of nowhere and made itself known, haha. Did you know Barb Ziezio from when everyone was discussing the local bands and planning those band reunions at Sylvan Beach? We are going to have a cookout at her house on the 9th. She always hosts a get together whenever we come up for Ralph and his wife, Frank Corradino and Kathy and I. We always look forward to it. Enjoy your 4th of July as well as your family get together on the 11th. We leave NY and head home here to Tennessee on the morning of the 11th.

Don't know Barb, but, always sad that the miles in between have prevented me from attending any of the band reunions at Sylvan Beach. I know many of the musicians that have showed up for these gigs. Your summer itinerary sounds exciting. Enjoy the country with friends and relatives while you can, and, be safe on the road.
