My brother here in Tennessee, my son in Kentucky, and a friend in Pennsylvania were having trouble messaging this morning. They were both doing it from a smart phone. They could type a couple of words, their screen would freeze, they would be unable to delete what they had typed and they would have to shut their phone off and turn it back on. I didn't experience the problem but I use my desk top PC to access FB and Messenger. It must be a problem that was limited to smart phones.
My son found that it is a hack. You need to delete messenger, run a security check, change your facebook password, and then re-install messenger.

i use it all the time My friends call me on it and my ipad turns into a phone.
FB owns messenger and lately it is getting out of hand as it tries harder to become more like SnapChat. I don't even get my friends posts pushed out to me which I despise. Yet I will get tons of ads and now they stuck them in Messenger to so have to deal with that. I use it as a tool for texting not pushing those dumb posts people request me to fwd to 10 or more friends. You also have to becareful with those as they carry viruses and are tools for hackers to gather your information.
But re: your question all working fine. maybe they were doing maintenance on the app.

I use messenger several times daily but I have made it my personal policy to delete any of those messages requesting that I forward it, even if coming from a friend. I use messenger and face time to communicate with my boys and my grandkids often. I try to facetime with my grand daughters at least once a week.

I don't know what's happened to the Internet but it get more and more worse in my opinion. I'm talking about those ads and articles that populate every page you view. Use to be able to log on to a main homepage and just see "real" articles and if you had to read more then you just expanded and read the rest. Now lots of false leads and if you want to read the artcle you can't tell what is correct to click on......the NEXT button is not always obvious and maytimes in my case brings me to something totally unrelated to what I was trying to read. It's crazy. Most of my surfing is on iPad so when I return to the PC its mind boggling. What I call just "crap".

A couple weeks ago I switched to Chrome as my main browser because they are now offering expanded ad blocking. I normally don't block ads because I feel that ad supported web sites deserve the revenue they get but some ads are annoying. Twice now when I have x'ed out of a pop-up ad a multi-choice question from Google has popped up asking me why. I replied and it answered. "OK you won't see it again." I will see how it works.

I switched to Microsoft Edge a few months ago. I have not had any problem with pop ups. I just have to click on the X and they disappear with no questions or further action. I tried Chrome and was not fond of it, but it is a matter of personal preference I guess. However today I tried to download a PDF file of a campsite map for the Villages at Turning Stone in order to make our reservations for 10 days in July, and it would not open a pdf file for one reason or another. I finally resorted to reloading Firefox and it worked fine. Have you tried the Edge browser and if so did you notice any problem downloading PDF file? I had ditched Firefox because it ate up so much disc space. Now I have TWO browsers loaded. Sheesh.
I have tried several browsers. I have used Firefox, Chrome, as well as Edge. Until today I have been quite satisfied with Edge. I have also tried multiple operating systems over the years that I have had a computer. The desktop that I presently have came loaded with Win8. That had it's problems so when they offered the free upgrade to Win10 I took it. My laptop came with Win7 and I upgraded that to Win10 also. My lack of technical ability leaves me forever on the hunt for the simplest operation rather than anything advanced. My first tablet was Android based and I had a hell of time learning to use it. Then my son sent me the Apple I-pad and I have to learn to navigate my way around that thing.
Thank goodness for friends such as yourself and Ralph that have helped me through technical problems over the years. I am just one of those old farts that even has a problem programming a DVR, lol.

I have not run into that problem with edge but I will check the next time I have it up. Most of our tablets are either straight Android or the Amazon version of Android. Amazon seems determined to keep you in their store rather than Google play.Apple does much the same. My grandsons got upset when they were here playing Minecraft on a Samsung tablet and an Amazon tablet and couldn't get them to talk to each other.

I just used edge to open an email which had a pdf attachment. It opened fine. Perhaps try a pdf from a different source,

I did. I opened another app and it worked, but the turning stone map would still not load. Not a major problem seeing as how is looks to be a problem specifically with that website and PDF file. For now at least I am just going to keep Mozilla Firefox loaded and go back and forth between the two browsers unless that causes a problem for me at some point.
I will probably sell the android tablet at some point since I am not using it. I love the I-pad for the "facetime" feature that lets me communicate with the grand kids face to face. I also love it because I can download a woodworking plan and work the plan directly from the I-pad.
Sadly for someone that is as tech challenged as I am, I have about every type of device one could wish for. I-pad, desktop, laptop, and smart phone, and have struggled with all of them at one time or another. lol
