ONEONTA - A Westchester County man arrested on drug charges in Oneonta yesterday died at a local hospital after ingesting a substance during a struggle with police, according to the Oneonta Police Department.
Around 5 p.m. yesterday, Oneonta police arrested 52-year-old Kenneth Faulkner of New Rochelle following a two-month investigation into illegal narcotics trafficking. Police say that after Faulkner was detained, they obtained search warrants for Faulkner’s person and for a residence at 85 Ford Avenue in Oneonta.
Police say Faulkner had an extensive criminal record and has served jail time for felonies such as robbery, burglary and narcotics possession and sales.
Faulkner was transported to the city of Oneonta’s Public Safety Building, and just after 5:30 p.m. a second search warrant was served allowing officers to conduct a body search.
Police say that during a body search, Faulkner became uncooperative and combative, then forcibly closed the door to a holding cell and shut himself inside, alone. Officers were quickly able to open the door and determined Faulkner had placed a substance believed to be cocaine in his mouth, apparently in an attempt to swallow it.
During a brief struggle with officers, Faulkner appeared to have ingested the substance, according to police. EMT’s from the Oneonta Fire Department were immediately called and Faulkner was transported to the A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.
Police say that while Faulkner was in the hospital’s emergency department, he suffered medical complications and died at 7:40 p.m. His body was transported to Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton where an autopsy and toxicology screening will be performed.
Police say that Oneonta police are investigating the incident under the supervision of the Otsego County District Attorney’s Office.
