In November I bought a new Dell computer running Windows 10 Desktop Intel core i7, 8GB 1TBHDD which I assumed was or would be a hell of a lot faster than what I was running before and using WinXP.
Although still a learning curve using WIN10 I don't see what this has to do with logging onto the Internet and just browsing.
This morning when I went to turn it on seemed like for ever for it to get to my desktop so I could log on to Internet. When I clicked on Firefox it did not open and in the background a small black screen opened and then closed a couple of times. I then went and restarted the PC and slowly it came back to life.
I have called Frontier (have DSL) and I have spoken to DELL about slowness. Frontier runs a speedtest and says all is fine.
Dell the same and also tell me same, router is slow but when I spoke to Frontier about replacing it they wouldn't (unless I upgraded where they said I would qualify to get one) Tk u but no thank you. What is my guarantee it would be any better.
I am not sure what or why the slowness.
I also got an email from Spectrum stating I qualify for a 14.99pkg with 60 Mps. (my current with Frontier is 19.99 with 6Mps)
As much as I dislike Spectrum (TWC) I am seriously starting to think about switching....but first need to get an answer why no connection or slow connection to go on the Internet.
Any ideas? Tks.

Your new computer should be way faster than the internet connection. If you press Alt-Control-Delete and start Task Manager you might be able to see if something is running in the background and hogging resources. Warning: Task Manager looks a lot different in the Win 10 version, I found it confusing at first. I guess it provides more info but it took me awhile to sort out.
Although it isn't all relevant to your situation, let me relate what we went through with communication companies this summer. For quite a few years we had cell phones from Verizon and TV, internet and home phone with Time Warner. Time Warner bills went up every year. This spring we had enough and Barb did comparison shopping. We eventually settled on TV from Direct TV and everything else from Verizon. The Direct TV guy showed up while we were still on the phone with Verizon and we had to send him away because we weren't ready yet. When we did let him start a couple days later, he had the dish mounted on the roof, cables run to 4 TVs in 4 rooms and everything working in 3 hours.
Verizon was supposed to hook up the land line to our home phone and high speed internet. The guy couldn't get the phone to work and left to get help and I thought to return the next day. When he didn't show we called and found there was no follow up scheduled. We got upset and went to the store. We ended up with a wireless home phone and wireless internet along with unlimited data plans. It seemed OK at first but found out that the data plan slowed the internet rate after a cap was reached. That made it impossible to do things like watch Netflix and even regular internet surfing was a drag. We eventually gave up and switched the internet and phone back to TW (Spectrum).

chris I have Spectrum internet and really like it. Always is real fast for me. Light lighting!!!!!. I also rent their modem. I started with the introductory rate like they are offering you. After a year the price does go up. I pay $60.00 a month and that includes the rent for the modem. I think it is $10.00 or $12.00 I forgot. I just click and pay the bill when it comes. You can always test the speed of your internet at this link below. I always use it an it is accurate. CB I just checked my task manager and the list is a mile long and all foreign to me. I did notice I have to adobe flash player and wondering how that happened and why two. When I moved all my files from the old pc to the new one it looks like I have duplicates of programs...IE two my documents, two mypictures etc. I thought everything merged. Not sure if this is the way it should be or if it is up to me to combine the two as one. I think I need an expert to look at this.

Yes, I found it to be confusing. I think it shows every process running for every program and I found it a case of more being less as far as understanding what was going on. I focused mostly on what seemed to be unreasonable amounts of resources (CPU or memory) and telling task manager to stop them. It would give me a warning which I would ignore. Sometimes that would cause something to quit working and cause me to reboot but it doesn't break anything, Don't do this if you have an unsaved document or unsent email open.
I'm not sure about the duplicate file thing. File Explorer looks a little different now than it did previously. One of the things that shows is something called One Drive. A few years ago MS called it's version of on-line storage Sky Drive. I think there was some sort of EU copy right thing that made them change it to One Drive. On my Win 7 computer if I saved a Word doc locally I haad to manually upload it to One Drive in order to back it up to "the cloud." The new computer calls its document folder One Drive. I will have to explore if it backs up on line automatically.

yes I notices I have an icloud drive for photos (huge and understandably so. Also Google is driving me insane by trying to horn in on everything (which I wasn't aware of) I t seems to be associated with anything android. Recently I purchased a smart phone not realizing it already connected too many dots. Now I have issues with a Google account, my youtube account, yahoo account and my flickr account in form of passwords. In the beginning before the clouds you registered to use an account selected an iD and a password. That is what I try to sue until Google tells me no that is wrong and I have to now figure out what is what according to the World of Google. You can't get any physical help only virtual help and that is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Im getting too old to deal with this. (and don't wish to anymore)

I still use the speed test that Dave gave us the link to. Yes Alan, you CAN purchase a router instead of renting one from your internet provider. Our provider charges $10 a month for router rental. I had an inexpensive Belkin router that was not dependable. It would drop off line and I would have to unplug it and restart it to get it operational again. I presently use a Netgear router that I paid $79 for and in the entire time I have had it, I have never had to reboot it or mess with it. Before I bought the Belkin router, I had paid $10 a month for two or three years. I could have purchased 3 or 4 routers outright.
I think many will agree that Belkin is not as good as Netgear. Someone here on the forum told me that at one time. It may have been Dave or Ralph.
Out of sheer curiosity I just clicked on the speed test link. I have 66.46 mbps download speed and 5.83 mbps upload speed. It varies though. I have tested in the past and found that it was only in the thirties for a download speed.

Duh! I just realized that when we switched back to Spectrum the installation guy plugged the old slower modem into the newer faster one and our tablets were confused and sometimes connected to the old one. My fault I guess since I left it on the desk and didn't supervise the installer.

Do you have Spectrum for your cable tv provider Clarence. Are you satisfied with the service and rates? We have a bundle deal with land line phone, high speed internet, and "expanded basic" cable package. No premium channels and the cost is outrageous. Phone and internet are reasonable, but the cable tv rate is ridiculous. We pay over $160 a month for the package.

We went back and forth this summer because costs are going up and as you know SS is not. We went from Time Warner to Verizon and Dish Network because of constantly increasing costs. Verizon ended up being a horrible internet choice. We ended up paying an exit fee to go back to Spectrum (Time Warner).

I have had my router for 3 years now and never a problem with TWC. I love them. I get basic cable which is all I need. Hell it is still 80 channels I think. I do not watch movies when I do I like Hallmark during Christmas season.
Even $98.00 is way too much for me. I only pay our group rate monthly fee. Many people here are glued to TV and pay extremely high prices what with demand TV, HBO, and the rest. How many can ya watch. We have one guy here who always says how he loves his toys. His toys are all the channels etc he gets over $200/month. Then he is right in line for the free food and bread handouts. He is a little disabled Vet and quick to tell ya. LOL. I think he is a damn fool.

We can't have Dish here no dishes aloud on building which I think is great. They look ugly and demean the property value. At least my opinion. Of course what the property value is for this area must not be much anyway.
A lady on my floor had verizon tv plus was paying for TWC use of lines. I told her she was nuts but she won't believe me. Her bill for everything is $200 or more a month. Of course she does had one of those new 60 inch plasma TV. Benefits of cheap rent.
