I have Windows 10 and for the past couple of weeks have been getting messages that say I need to update my settings because there's a new update coming called "Windows 10 Creators Update". I'm not sure if I want this or not, because it zeros-in on the computer's location and also requires that I send them my voice input, as well as a few other allegedly great things. I'm wondering if these updated features are actually beneficial to me, or are just geared toward increased "Big brother is watching you" tactics. I need someone who knows more about computers than I do to help me decide on whether I should accept this update or not.
Can someone help me? Please?

I have been wondering the same thing Kit. After spending quite a bit of money to rid myself of the results of one such event I am very wary of such things. I continually receive notices asking me to try Microsoft Edge as my browser. Someone once told me that if it appears under the message icon in the lower right corner of you screen that it is legitimate. I was just thinking about you and our departed friend Dave as I read about the "Hamfest at Deerfield fire house. I hope you were able to attend and enjoy it. www.wktv.com/story/35951317/amateur-radio-festival-brings-many-from-all-over

As a general rule I try not to be the first kid on the block with updates particularly operating system updates. From what I have been reading MS has held back updates from some computers because of problems with some versions of some processors. That said I did allow a Win 10 update to go through a week or so ago so I am now running what is called the "Creators update." To find out what version you are running click on the Start button, in the alphabetical list of selections pick Settings. In Settings pick Systems>About. Mine shows Win 10 Version 1703. Version 1703 is the Creators Edition.
I did a couple searches about problems with this update. The most recent I found was from May so nothing recent. So far it seems to be working OK although the update took a long time. Also working OK on Barb's computer which worried me since she OK'd it when it was first offered to her.

I put up with the ads on the forum because the revenue that Proboards receives for the ads is what allows them to provide the forums for free. I DID allow for the microsoft update recently and it took forever to complete and restarted the machine several times. When all was done I didn't really see any change because I used firefox as my browser as opposed to Edge.

I guess my question was whether the 'Creators Update' would divulge more of my personal information to Microsoft than I'd be comfortable with. They'd have my voice print, location, and most likely could look at anything that was on my computer. I'm wondering if any benefits of the update would be worth the privacy I'd be relinquishing. Any comments?

The update that I did had a place where you could elect to share your location or not under the privacy settings. Of course in today's world that doesn't necessarily mean that the info isn't acquired by some other means. My Ipad and my smart phone also had to have the privacy setting set so they don't show your location. Hell, they say that info is collected through a smart tv as well as other "smart" home devices. I probably shouldn't sit in the kitchen in my shorts just in case our refrigerator is watching. LOL

Sounds silly, doesn't it, Clip?... but I don't believe it's as far-fetched as one might think. I know several people who have put a piece of black electrical tape over the camera and microphone openings on their laptops just to avoid snooping eyes and ears. There's even illegal 'snooping' software that activates the microphone of a cell phone to transmit without making or receiving a call (this has happened to someone in my family). I'm confident that "Big Brother" and perhaps others are listening to us all the time so I guess that answer to the proverbial question is, "Yes, we can definitely hear you now".

I sincerely try to avoid putting any critical personal information on any of my electronic devices. I don't bank online and if I purchase something online I do so with a prepaid visa purchased from a local source such as Walgreen's. I load $100 on the prepaid card and if it is compromised all they get it what is left of the $100. It hinders the shopping experience and convenience to a certain extent, but gives me peace of mind. The bank is only 3 or 4 miles from the house and I can certainly spare the time in day to drive there if there is any banking transactions to be performed. I do use the ATM often and I use my debit card for many purchases. Even that exposes one to thieves and evil doers.

I laugh over the tape over the camera on the laptop. There is a website called Earthcam where you can broadcast your movements in you house( certain room or room) live to anyone who want to watch. It is sort of fun especially if you follow the nudist persuasion. I love it.Very liberating

I'm afraid that one doesn't need 'Earthcam' to broadcast one's activities to the Internet. If there's a live camera and/or microphone on any of your devices, it can be activated with, or without, your approval. Best to make sure they're covered unless your privacy doesn't matter to you.
Same with allowing Windows or any other on-line entity to monitor your personal activities... nudity or otherwise.

Haha. It would have to be a rather sick and depraved individual that would want to see MY body naked. LOL! It would probably fry their monitor.

I have not received any of the updates you guys are mentioning here and on another post about Microsoft. Im guessing you don't need that if you don't want it. (unless it hasn't reached my PC yet) Maybe it is for phones or laptops. Now every device is connected to your computer. It hard for me to tell what is what anymore. Geesh!!!!!

They just had it on the news about some appliance that spies on you. How do we know what actually is going on and what they are inserting in our devices etc. On my PC my I have my camera facing a blank wall. They can listen all they want to the heavy breathing. LOL
