I take advantage of the fact that the Aldi's price changes take place on Wednesdays. I go to the VA on Wednesday for my healthy eating classes, and when I leave there, I stop at Aldi's. It is only a couple of blocks away and on my route home.
I can confirm the claims that their produce is always fresh daily, and their prices on specials are beyond anything I see in other local markets. The 79 cent eggs were a good deal, but their large eggs are normally only around 99 cents a dozen anyway.
With few exceptions, most of their store branded products are of equal quality with national brands and as good or better than other supermarket chain's store branded items.
If a person doesn't shop there for anything else, it is worth a stop to just buy fresh produce. I eat a salad at least twice a day lately, and their produce is ALWAYS garden fresh, crisp, and flavorful. I stopped yesterday and bought fresh broccoli. I purchased two huge heads and it rang up at less than 2 dollars. Large, stuffing sized bell peppers were 59 cents apiece, as opposed to 79 cents at Kroger.
On another note, Strawberries are on the stands here in this area. I bought 3 quarts yesterday for $3.50 at a roadside stand. We pick them up a few quarts at a time throughout the period that they are available here from local farms, and Kathy freezes them. We normally put up about 15-20 quarts, vacuum packed and frozen for later use.
I anxiously await the farmer's market openings. They are open, but the locally grown stuff is limited at this point. I love to browse the markets and pick up locally butchered beef and pork, fresh eggs, honey, as well as locally grown produce. When we lived in N Utica, I would stop almost daily at Juliano's stand in the Big Lots parking lot for fresh vegetables. I worked for years at Griffiss with Joe Juliano, and Joey Jr. Great family and great produce. Check them out if you get a chance.
