I seldom watch college football, but this historic event in college football history definitely had me waiting in eager anticipation as the days counted down to kick off. We were glued to our TV from 8 pm until after midnight, only leaving our chairs to use the bathroom or get a drink between quarters and at half-time. I am a University of Tennessee fan at heart. It turned out to be a proud night for Tennessee Vols fans. It was a very exciting and action packed game.
The hype and anticipation has kept the area football fans buzzing for the entire summer. The tickets sold out quickly and over 160,000 were sold. The actual attendance set a record for the highest attendance ever for a college game. The final attendance figures document over 156,900 actual bodies passing through the gates. It was anticipated that it would take 4 hours to clear the stands and parking lots after the game.
While we always see a huge crowd in town for the two race weekends, Bristol hasn't seen a sell out crowd for a NASCAR race in several years, and it was wonderful to see the crowds in town for the game and the fact that they were spending millions in restaurants, hotels, and stores, bolstering our local economy.
It is amazing that people would pay for a ticket to attend a football game in a venue so large in size that those sitting in the stands were best served watching the game on the huge "colossus" tv screen suspended on cables high above the field. From the top of the grandstand seating areas the players looked like ants.
It was very moving to listen to the singing of the national anthem and to see the flag unfurled on the field. It made a person swell with patriotic pride to see the image of our flag, composed of fans with colored cards that they held up, making up a huge image of the American flag. With all the controversy in recent days concerning the NFL player that sat in protest while the anthem was played, I was moved stand with pride, right here in our own living room while the anthem was played, as I always stand when they play the anthem or when the flag passes by.
