I don't know if anyone read any of the letters to the editor today in the OD. There was a women in there writing to complain about the Children's Museum in Utica. She got it spot on. The woman that runs that place is horrible. When you go there, it's like your invading her personal space. And her employees are no better. It is a very unfriendly place to take your kids. Even my son's kindergarten teacher wasn't happy to be taking a field trip there because of the people that run it. It just boggles my mind how they get so much backing and I've heard from a lot of parents the same complaints that I have. Interesting.

I suggest trying the Rome Historical Society's museum on Church St. in Rome (across Court St. from the County Court house and next door to St. Peter's church). It is one of the best kept secrets in the region. While not a children's museum, there are many displays to fascinate children there. The Diorama is a 1st-class technological wonder. And they are doing more and more with hands-on projects. And nicer people you won't find anywhere.
(disclosure: I am a member of the board of trustees of the non-profit organization)

Did I mention it's free? They do something like 80 school class presentations a year and don't charge a dime.

We used to take my nephew there, but it has been a few years.
Does it really cost $9.00 admission?? Wow, that is just crazy!

From what I remember from being there years ago it looks like the place collects all the trash in Utica and Calls it "Fun". Yea go to the Historical Society or Fort Stanwix- you'll get more for your "Money". Maybe someone should start a list of "cheap", or well reasonably priced for what you get, things that families can can do in the local area. - Oh- and- Not It

I've always wondered why in the world is the Rome Sports Hall of Fame at the Erie Canal Village? What a strange place to have it!!! Talk about two totally different things!

You got that right, countrygal. It's an odd location for sure, and certainly not very convenient. They were once in part of City Hall. When the city ended up owning the Canal Village, they put that pole-barn up and moved the museum there to make room for an expanded codes department.
It's a very impressive set of displays but not easy to get to.

I spent a lot of time in my teens at the Erie Canal Village. My Mom was the Volunteer Coordinator there. I got "volunteered" a lot back then.....usually under protest! LOL. I think they should move the HOF someplace else. Maybe even on base someplace.

I brought my son to the Children's Museum in Utica a couple of years ago. Was not impressed. The one we have here is great, though. Check it out: www.gcmuseum.com/flash.htm

Ya know.......I remember when I was a kid, the museum was up on Oneida Street just off the corner of the Parkway in a little house.
Seems it was a much friendlier place back then.

When I was a kid, the Childrens Museum was up at Valley View where Danielle's restaurant is now. We thought it was great!
