(WKTV) - Three people and a dog drowned in two separate incidents in Delaware County, New York State Police said.
About 11 p.m. on Monday, New York State Police in Oneonta received a report that Marvin J. Taub, 74, of Oneonta was missing. Taub had picked up his neighbor's dogs to walk them at the Pine Lake Campus of Hartwick College in Davenport. Taub's car was located in the campus parking lot and a search was organized.
About 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, search personnel located tracks leading to a frozen pond on campus. Using boats and rescue equipment, fire personnel were able to recover Taub's body from the pond. The Delaware County Medical Examiner listed his death as accidental as drowning with hypothermia. The dogs were located on the campus and returned to the owners.
On Tuesday, state police received a report that Ira T. Landess, 74, and Nancy H. Klinger-Landess, 71, of Harpersfield were missing with their German Shepherd.
A search of the couple's property by the New York State Police showed a large ice hole in a frozen pond, with a dog toy near the entrance of the hole. State Police divers searched the pond and at about 11:30 p.m. found Ira Landess' body in the pond.
The bodies of Nancy Landess and the dog were found around 1 p.m. Wednesday. The deaths were ruled accidental as drowning with hypothermia.
Very sad indeed. One would think that sensible adults would know better than to venture out on the ice on ANY body of water considering the varying temperatures that have prevailed. Was there not 50 degree weather less than a week ago up there. Such a tragedy to have occur and such a sorrowful start to the new year.
