Syracuse boy, 13, pleads guilty in man’s beating deathSYRACUSE — A Syracuse teenager has pleaded guilty to lesser charges in the beating death of a 51-year-old man who was attacked at random as part of a “knockout game.”The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports that the 13-year-old boy pleaded guilty to felony assault and attempted assault before his trial was scheduled to start Thursday in Onondaga County Family Court. The teen had initially been charged with manslaughter. He and a then-15-year-old boy were arrested after Michael Daniels died a day after police say the two teens punched him as he stood outside a corner store on May 23. Police say the boys were competing to knock him out with one punch. The trial for the other teen, now 16, was held earlier this week. The judge says he’ll render a verdict Monday. I had plenty of free time on my hands when I was 15, but I didn't go around punching innocent people for no reason. These lowlifes are street punks who should be locked up for a good long time, if only to send a message to other tough guy wanabees that this kind of behavior will lead to a stiff prison sentence. It's time to start handling dirtbags like this the same way they treat their innocent victims.

But the Police have to be careful how this is handeled because they do not want to put a monkey wrench in the police-community relations. They need some Hoops for Dreams.

Maybe it's a sign that we are getting older but it's hard not to say "What's wrong with people now?" There were fights when I was growing up but nothing like that.

What we have here more than likely are 2 punk gangbanger's out to prove how tough they are. So they target an innocent victim & kill him. If it were up to me they'd be tried as adults. Enough of this juvi crap.

Agreed, it wasn't a fight. NY prosecutors have been a lot tougher in other cases that seemed less egregious. The details are a little sketchy for me this morning but didn't NY try a 13 year old as an adult on a murder charge a few years ago?

Some would have us believe that the community has failed these kids.

The community has indeed failed these kids. So have their parents. But so what? They should as a minimum be removed from civil society. I don't elect public officials and pay my taxes for the government to allow vermin to remain on our streets. If we had a contract with the government and when they didn't perform, we kicked them out and got another government ... wait a minute. Aren't we supposed to be doing that when we elect our officials? Why are we not?
The only thing learned by the peers of the two offending juveniles so far is that they can do what they want and get away with it.

Yea, it's a pretty sad state of affairs when a person can't even walk down the street without being punched out by punks who more than likely were trying to earn their gang stripes. As far as I'm concerned these lowlifes can kill each other off all they want. But when they attack innocent citizens like the case in Syracuse then it's time to take the kid gloves off, treat them as adults & lock 'em up. Enough is enough. Dave said right. They're vermin, & should be treated as such.

The atmosphere and environment is changing here in the US. Incidents such as this make it ridiculous to even think about taking away anyone's right to carry a concealed handgun for self defense. Things would have ended much differently if the victim had been carrying. A person should have the right to defend themselves by whatever means necessary. Especially in a world where street punks travel in packs like predatory vermin. I can imagine the liberal media's take on THAT situation. "Teens shot and killed by vigilante gun owner." It would be Travon and Zimmerman a few times over. The punks and scum of the world have made it necessary for people to contemplate carrying some sort of self defense weapon. I purchased pepper spray that I carry in the center console of the truck, and when we go to the casino or if I go to the store late at night, I slip it in my jacket pocket. I bought it after ending up in the elevator in the casino parking structure with a group of gangster looking young men at 2 AM one night. We got on at one floor, and at the next floor the doors opened and this "gang" of young men got on, and sort of rudely squeezed Kathy and I into the back corner of the elevator. They got off at the same floor we were parked on, so when they left the elevator I pushed the button to close the door and we went up one more floor and back down again. I abandoned the idea of carrying a handgun myself, only because I would seldom carry it around here, and if I put it in the truck and forgot to take it out, I could end up in jail somewhere that didn't recognize a Tennessee permit. I had ordered a 9mm, and simply cancelled the order after rethinking the idea. The money was simply not a worthy investment in my eyes. I fully defend the 2nd amendment, and have plenty of weapons at the ready in the house, but I simply have not yet reached that point in my life where I feel threatened enough to have to carry a gun everywhere I go. A person SHOULD have the right to defend themselves by WHATEVER means necessary. Especially in a world where street punks travel in packs like predatory vermin. So far, I feel secure enough simply carrying the pepper spray when I deem a place somewhat "unsafe." If I lived in Utica, and went out at night, YOU'RE DAMNED RIGHT I WOULD CARRY a gun. You folks are living on an urban battlefield for gosh sakes.

I understand these two teenagers were tried and sentence as juveniles but even juveniles do commit murder. I can't believe these two were only sentence to 18 months confinement for murdering a human being who did absolutely nothing to them. Our court system is definitely sending out the wrong message with this shameful sentence.
