Well, it looks as though Cuomo has failed in his attempt to get FEMA funds secured for the homeowner's who were hit with the recent floods. Area municipalities will probably be eligible. I feel bad for the folks who lost it all & are now left holding the bag as the result of beauracratic number crunchers. Gee, a few days ago Cuomo claimed that he was going to speak with Obama personally on the following day of one of his photo ops in the valley. He then claimed on the following day that he spoke with FEMA officials & Cuomo said that he wasen't optimistic that homeowner's would qualify. Uh, why did Cuomo change his story & how come the news media didn't follow up on Cuomo's claim that he was going to speak with the POTUS personally? Just wondering.
As an aside the Salvation Army in Herkimer has announced that it will provide folks hit by the floods with some essentials to help them get by. Good for them. But I'm wondering. Recently WKTV ran a telethon raising almost $90,000 which was to be used to aid victims of the floods. Umm, where's the money? I haven't heard of any of the funds being disbursed. So, what gives? I don't recall but I believe the funds went to the United Way or the Red Cross. I'm not bragging but I donated a few bucks & I'd like to know where my money went, as I haven't heard a word since what the donations will be used for. I know 90k ain't a whole lot but that's not the point.

Wasn't the President in Africa on safari when the flood hit. I think he was just ending the vacation. Not sure though.
I too thought the money for the homeowners went to the United Way. I sure do hope they find a way to cut a fair amount of money in a check to the homeowners. How is that decided anyway.

One has to wonder about the fairness of the rules. I read that FEMA money won't be made available to private home owners, yet there is a man in Oneida that owns several flood damaged properties that he rents out. It is considered a business, so he will be eligible for help, yet the poor soul with his own home, or that rents, and has lost all their personal possessions is screwed. How fair is that?

I don't know what I'm talking about ... well, at least I'm honest ... but I thought FEMA mainly subsidized the cost of flood insurance, which if an individual didn't it take out on his home, couldn't expect to collect on flood damages. Also, FEMA money goes toward immediate disaster relief in area-wide endeavors to save lives and property. Beyond that, FEMA money is evidently doled out to states and smaller entities and that's probably pretty political. About which Cuomo may now be getting a lesson.
I just searched across the Internet, but cannot find a succinct summary of how it all works. Let me know if someone does find something understandable.

Yup, all of that I'd put under the public works heading I alluded to, but I don't see any money for losses of private property, at least not in that particular document. Maybe FEMA doesn't cover that exxcept in their subsidization of flood insurance premiums. And money for losses sustained by businesses doesn't seem to be mentioned either. By the way, I've read FEMA is losing money and is unable to pay back debts to the US Treasury. Too many disasters is the reason given. Where and to whom all the money went I have not seen mentioned, but the Feds plan to raise the flood insurance premiums for homeowners (of course.) Flood insurance is a good deal, actually. I live within two miles of the ocean and my subsidized flood premium is 400 and something per year. Ralph's comment could easily be true.

Cuomo will be at HCCC today. Apparently the State is going to come up with $10 million in aid for homeowner's. It's all politics or am I being cynical? FEMA says no to aid, so Cuomo steps in with $10 million. While the aid is sorely needed, Cuomo becomes the hero, his poll number's rise {at least in this area}& people forget some of the other crap he's pulled. And he's doing it without the Legistlature's involvement. Which is probably fine with them. I mean, expect them to return to Albany in this heat? Leave their waterfront homes, etc.? Talk about some grumbling!
