It's a new job title being created by Sir Andrew Cuomo. Sir Andy has petitioned the state civil service commission to authorize the creation of 120 jobs with the above title. The job description says that the new "Fellows" would be tasked with "working on the most pressing policy issues facing the state & advancing the ADMINISTRATIONS strategic objectives & programming initiatives". In other words, a Cuomo hack. Of course these "fellows" will most likely be political lackeys, friends, family members, etc., etc., as the jobs will be appointed out of Sir Andrew Cuomo's office. Gee, I thought the state was broke. Guess not when political lackeys, friends, family members, etc., etc. need a job.
Oh, by the way. A recent investigation by the N.Y. Times has discovered that a turd, er, third of Cuomo appointees to the Empire State Development Corp. were Sir Andy's political associates, donors & friends or their relatives.
Prince Andrew at his best. Thank God we only have 2 more years of this clown.

It seems like this is an educational program unless I am reading it wrong. Like when a person applies to be a ' fellow' at a University. Gee for $72,000 I might send in my resume. I do like the Albany area. Now if they will throw in moving expenses be a good idea. Besides I always thought being a fellow would be kind of cool.

Not a bad idea, although there will undoubtedly be at least a few attempts to get people into the program who are beholden to a party or cause. Some excerpts from the The Empire State Fellows Program FAQ follow. The salary package indicates this is a program for young professionals who are not far advanced in their careers. (Underlining is my emphasis.) The Empire State Fellows Program is designed to attract talented professionals with demonstrated leadership potential who want to refocus their careers on public service.
Upon reviewing applicant skills and agency needs, the panel of judges will recommend that each fellow be appointed to work closely with a particular policy-maker within the New York State executive branch.
Applicants who are members of groups underrepresented in policy-making roles in New York State government, which include but are not limited to Black, Hispanic, Asian and Pacific Islander persons; women; persons with disabilities; and gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender persons, are particularly encouraged to apply.
Fellows will receive an annual salary commensurate with experience, not to exceed $72,765, plus a generous benefits package.
United States citizens residing anywhere in the world are eligible to serve as Empire Fellows, so long as they can work in Albany, New York throughout two year Fellowship.
The Governor will convene a panel of judges to review application materials, interview the most promising applicants, and select the best and the brightest applicants to participate in the Empire State Fellows Program. The panel will evaluate each finalist’s ability to think on their feet, analyze and solve problems, communicate effectively, and find creative solutions to complex policy problems
Each Empire Fellow is encouraged to develop a mentoring relationship with the member of the Cabinet or other high-level official to whom they are assigned. Fellows will also develop informal relationships with legislators, judges, and executive leaders through a networking breakfast series.
