New York Property Taxes Ranked By Empire CenterAll of you happy NY taxpayers can avail yourselves of information regarding tax rates in NY State .. who has the highest and who has the lowest. At opposite ends of the spectrum, the village of Wellsville in western New York has the highest rate per assessed evaluation while homes in the Long Island's exclusive Hamptons have the lowest. www.empirecenter.org/AboutUS/news_releases/2013/05/proprtaxes050813.cfmThe Empire Center makes a big deal out of this but the reason for the discrepancy seems perfectly obvious. It costs a fairly fixed amount of money to run a town and to do so a tax is levied. In areas where home values have fallen drastically, such as in western NY State, the resulting tax per evaluation dollar will be high (you know, because the divisor is smaller?) In the Hamptons where town expenses are low due almost non existent social services because of almost non-existent poor folks, the tax per evaluation dollar will be low. So, what does that prove? It proves arithmetic really works, if you had any doubts about it. But it displaces attention from the real problem, spending is too high to be supported by ordinary mortals.
