The arrests on Tuesday of State Sen. Malcolm Smith, City Councilman Dan Halloran and four other political leaders stemmed from several alleged plots to bribe and influence pols. One of them was an effort to land a spot for Smith on the Republican mayoral ballot. According to a federal complaint released Tuesday:
Smith conspired with Halloran and others to bribe GOP leaders to help Smith run as a Republican for mayor even though he is a Democrat.
To pull off the scheme, Smith met with an unidentified witness who wound up turning on him — and an undercover FBI agent posing as a wealthy real estate developer — on Nov. 16, 2012 at a White Plains hotel.
At the end of the meeting, Smith asked the unidentified witness to contact an unnamed Republican County chairman to try and “change him” into supporting Smith for mayor.
Later that day, the undercover FBI agent met with Queens City Councilman Daniel Halloran at a restaurant “in order to receive a bribe in exchange for taking unrelated official action.”
During the sitdown, Halloran agreed to talk to the GOP leaders of Queens and the Bronx to find out what they “would want in exchange for their support for a mayoral candidate.” He also pocketed a $20,500 cash bribe.
