Reaction of legislature:
" One Republican assemblyman, Marc W. Butler, whose Mohawk Valley district includes workers at the Remington Arms plant in Ilion, said the measure “tramples on the constitutional rights of our constituents.” Another, David DiPietro, who represents a rural district in western New York, said his office had received 430 e-mails and text messages from constituents opposed to new gun restrictions — and none in support.
And Assemblyman Steven Katz, a Hudson Valley Republican, said Mr. Cuomo should not have pressured lawmakers to act so quickly. Tuesday was only the second day of the 2013 legislative session.
“Why are we being bullied into voting on this bill without our proper, responsible due diligence?” Mr. Katz asked. “Solely due to the governor’s misguided, egotistic notion that this will advance his presidential aspirations.”
But Assemblyman Joseph R. Lentol, a Brooklyn Democrat and sponsor of the bill, said, “We believe that it’s up to us to lead the way.”

New law says:
"The expanded ban on assault weapons broadens the definition of such weapons, banning semiautomatic pistols and rifles with detachable magazines and one military-style feature, as well as semiautomatic shotguns with one military-style feature. New Yorkers who already own such guns can keep them but will be required to register them with the state. "
What is a military feature?

I predict that this law will solve nothing. Criminals will continue to obtain weapons illegally. Crime will not decrease an iota.

several assembly people argued that fact that the bill would serve to keep tack of all legal gun owners look for any excuse to rip them of permits and find the so called assault rifles when its time to confiscate them i was with several local police chiefs tonite who indicated that they would not be harrassing legal firearms owners under any of the provisions

From above, "New York Gun Control: Cuomo, Legislative Leaders Reach Tentative Deal On Assault Weapons, Magazine," the following sentence: They say the tentative deal will be debated behind closed doors Monday in the Senate and the Democrat-led Assembly and could be sent to the floor for a vote Monday.[/blockquote]
Oh. Isn't that nice? Behind closed doors. I thought in a democracy the doors to the legislature were left open. "Behind closed doors" has become the accepted manner by which Democrats pass legislation. Obamacare was just the beginning. I wonder how long it will be before Cuomo starts simply skipping the legislature and uses "executive powers" to simply shove his liberal agenda up your butts by decree from his throne in Albany just like his mentor in Washington.

You should read the whole bill, it's a friggin' nightmare!!! I'm surprised that they didn't outlaw bricks while they were at it, they did pretty much everything else.

I was at a meeting last night where a friend did bring a copy of the whole bill which caused quite a stir. A month ago gun control caused a heated debate in the same group. This time there was a heated discussion but no debate. The bill simply had no supporters.
My friend's wife is a LEO, here are some of his comments. "My wife carries a Glock with a 17 round mag on duty but off duty she has to get something with a 7 round clip. That's nuts." "You can only have 2 magazines for your rifle." "I have to give up a rifle I've owned for more than 20 years." "I think 2 of my guns just went missing." That from a man who lives with law enforcement and is an incredibly straight arrow.

From a news story this morning (Sorry, I lost the reference.)
"“There’s just too many incidents that are happening that you think could be avoided if there were stronger regulations about it,” one mother from Larchmont said, adding when asked if her children’s safety is her motivation, “Absolutely, I mean you can’t even send them to school now. Now my kids have police in front of their school. I mean you wonder how far it’s going to go.”
True enough, but the poor woman thinks what Andrew Cuomo forced through the NY legislature on Monday will help us all to avoid another Sandy Hook. That is what's known as Crazy Thinking. But hey, the governor fooled everyone with his "property tax cap," so why not fool them with "the nation's toughest gun control."
This is the stuff presidential campaigns are made of ... Bullsh*t.

Do you have the bill number? It would be helpful in researching which Assemblymen and Senators to not vote for next election.

This will have the same effect on "Gun Crimes" as the Rockefeller Laws did on illegal drugs.

Precisely Ralph. NY needs to enact a few MORE laws that will fill the prisons with people who have committed minor infractions under ill conceived laws. Maybe they can simply raise your taxes again to provide for more prisons. That will stimulate job growth among those wanting to be corrections officers.
While a legal gun owner will be unable to use some of his legally obtained, legal weapons because there is no 7 round magazine available, demented shooters will continue to deal out death and destruction, unimpeded by Cuomo's new law, or any other gun control legislation.
I DID agree with one of Obama's initiatives he spoke of this morning. That is that he is in favor of further research into the effects of violent video games on children and adults alike. I am a firm believer that any game that makes scoring the most kills, inflicting the most carnage, and dealing out the most destruction, a winning skill.
Anyone that has ever served in combat will agree that killing is NOT a game. Killing is NOT a recreational activity. Violence of that sort is NOT fun. That sort of violence leaves military veterans scarred for life with PTSD, nightmares and flashbacks when it has been a reality in their lives. Why in hell would anyone condone allowing their children to spend hours in front of a game console totally enthralled with the idea of scoring the most kills?
I have to believe that it DOES have an effect on a kid's mind at one level or another, and for a person that is not totally stable mentally to begin with, it would be easy to slip over the line between fantasy and reality. This type of game can easily become a "role playing game" in the mind of a child. One could become accustomed to slipping into their "role" while they play the game for hours and hours, and one would think that it could have a significant psychological effect on a young mind.
The anti gun folks keep saying that if these laws they want to enact save ONE life, they will be worth impinging on the 2nd amendment.
I say it would save a significantly larger number than one life if they took violent games like Mortal Combat off the market and made them illegal to produce.
Personally I foresee no significant reduction in lives lost by limiting the size of a magazine or the shape and style of a gun stock.

Agreed. Children should be playing less video games (absolutely no violent games), and should be outdoors playing Hide & Seek, Tag and Red Rover. I absolutely believe that because children do not interact socially as we did, there are a whole lot more anti-social sociopaths roaming the streets today.

My experience with kids is that almost anything can be imagined to be a gun including an extended index finger (which have gotten kids suspended).
My guess is that kids play fighting came well before Australopithecus africanus.
