www.uticaod.com/latestnews/x1292890191/Official-Cuomo-fires-emergency-management-directorTypical Long Island politics in action. The reputation of Long Island politicians is why a carpet bagging Hillary Clinton became NY's Senator Clinton. Her young republican opponent Rick Lazio came across like someone out of an episode of the Soprano's. He was popular on Long Island, but his support dropped off significantly when one crossed the Throg's Neck Bridge onto Mainland NY State. I was registered as a Republican and I voted for Hillary Clinton in that, the last election in which I would vote as a NY State resident.

Well, I can see why Cuomo fired him for reasons of poor public example, but it might have been unfair. To ask a man to leave his home in the aftermath of a storm to lead the effort in Albany, one would expect his employer to help free up his family to get out and do what they needed for their sakes since the fellow was taken away from home. However, a smarter move would have been for the Director to arrange for a private service to do the job ... if he could find one at such a time.

I guess I disagree Dave. He was the Emergency Management Director. He knew the job would be demanding in the event of an emergency when he took the position.
I am not surprised that he was required to be in Albany. That was where he belonged in preparation for the anticipated disastrous effects of Sandy and for the duration of the emergency response. He certainly could not do his job from Long Island with no power or ability to move about. I DO think he was most likely remiss in not moving his family out of the area in anticipation of the impending storm. I would think they would have also been in Albany with him, or at least out of the path of the storms major impact area until the storm had passed.
I have to think that his family and home didn't deserve any more special consideration than his neighbors who also probably had trees down and were confined to their homes if they had not evacuated. Why would he or his family rate any special attention when streets were probably blocked to critically needed emergency traffic, and the entire area was most likely gridlocked by Flood damage, as well as down power lines and trees?
I am not overly shocked and surprised to see that this had happened though. That is the way political influence and money works in today's world.
That is simply a view from a different perspective.

Well, you're right, he should have taken some advance action. Or for all we know, someone was waiting for him to make a mistake anyway. And it was not a terrific idea for a state official. It could be he would have ordinarily got away with it, too, except possibly for how he dealt with the local officials.

One never knows what goes through the minds of those in political power in Albany.
It only takes one enemy in the right position, in the right place, at the right time, to bring down the wrath from on high on a person when you sit in a visible and vulnerable, politically appointed position.
One who sits in such a position can't with any confidence pack a lunch. They may be back home and unemployed before noon on any given day, haha.
