Breaking News Alert The New York Times Wednesday, May 30, 2012 -- 10:01 PM EDT ----- New York Plans a Ban on Big Sizes of Sugary Drinks New York City plans to enact a far-reaching ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts, in the most ambitious effort yet by the administration of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg to combat rising obesity. The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March. Just one more case of government interference into private lives and a person's right to choose. If it is up to Bloomy and Michelle Obama, we will all be eating lettuce, tofu and trail mix.
It is just a wee bit frightening when government is inspecting brown bag lunches in the schools, banning soda machines during school lunch periods, and now proposing a ban on Big Gulp and 20 oz. coffee cups.
Am I alone in my opinion that there are just a few things happening around us that could use the attention of these government officials? Much more than whether I drink a 32 oz iced tea from a large plastic container or not? Is he going to pass a law that you can only get one packet of sugar with a cup of coffee? I am sure that NYC has many problems that need addressing long before they take the time and effort to monitor how much .sugar a fat person consumes.
Does anyone else find it a little disgusting that the government fined a Utah school system because they forgot to shut off one of the soda machines during the lunch period? Does it make sense to fine a school district several thousand dollars when schools are struggling to buy books and fund worthwhile education related programs?
We need to cut spending and shrinking government is a great place to start. Do away with some of these overpaid unneeded regulators and their regulations, and we would save a substantial amount of money. We probably could live happily ever after without a government program measuring the effects of cow farts on the ozone layer, without a program to limit the size of our beverage cups, without taking up the time of teachers and lunch room aids by requiring them to embarrass our children by taking their brown bag lunch away from them while billing the parent for a government approved substitute, and without paying government employees to monitor and enforce and administer these ridiculous and frivolous programs.
NYC is a great place to visit. I would hate to see the day when Bloomy or anyone else finds it necessary to ban hot dog vendors, potato knish stands in the subway stations and pretzel vendors with hibachi burners.
It is bad enough that idiots like Bloomberg are on a campaign to limit our second amendment rights, but when it comes to a point that government finds it prudent to interfere in our lives to a point of limiting the size of our beverage containers, I think they are going way beyond what we elect them to oversee and control.
I have to believe that the answer to childhood obesity doesn't lie in banning sugary drinks. If they truly want to slim down American children, they should ban video games and text messaging, and institute a program that requires a mandatory hour of physical activity each day at the end of the school day.
President Kennedy started a physical fitness program in schools. We had mandatory physical education standards that schools had to meet. THAT was the answer to childhood obesity, rather than trashing our kid's PBJ and juice box and making them eat a government approved substitute.

I don't think the kids actually during gym class. I think they are now taught what each sport is all about.
I remember many kids who refused to be active during gym class. First they didn't what to get their sneakers dirty and second they did not want to sweat. I remember that. The gym teachers can't do much of anything with only 38 minutes of gym class time. It takes 10 minutes to get large classes to calm down and then another 10 minutes to take attendance.

Someday I will sit down and write a thesis on what government is doing that it shouldn’t and what it is not doing that it should. As far as other peoples lives go. They’re going to make us not get fat, but won’t make those that should parent. They tell us that children cannot be bullies, but won’t let parents or responsible adults enforce any discipline, and if you’re bullied you damn well better not reciprocate. They tell us that we must educate our children more, that they need to learn high tech and compete with the rest of the world, but yet a goodly portion can’t friggin’ read to save their lives. Illegal aliens are illegal, but seem to have more rights & perks than we do. We need to be tougher but more politically correct…… ? I could go on and on and on and on……. …..some days after reading this crap I just want to go sit in the corner and suck on my thumb till it all goes away.

I agree with everything you said Ralph. It's rather frustrating to watch. All very repairable if only we had a society with the balls to see it through. Sadly in today's society it has become much easier to sit back and bitch about it and wait for someone else to do the tough stuff.

Gee BZ, I guess you should have simply changes schools. West Canada has purple gym suits, Whitesboro has blue, Oriskany has maroon. Pick a school with your favorite color. Color wasn't the problem. The style was just plain ugly. No color would have made a difference. Ugly is ugly.

Part of the problem with the sugary drinks is that the sizes available. Seems like small is now large, Medium is extra large and large is gigantic. I don't want a 16 oz coke and sure as hell don't want a 32 oz drink. I go out of my way in supermarkets to get 7 oz soda's. The 7 oz are my diets cokes. I don't need diet drinks just less of them. In another matter, has anyone noticed it is getting harder to buy a 6 pack of beer? You either have to buy a 12 pack or case. The 6 packs have 16 oz. I don't want 16 oz beers. 12 oz are big enough. I don't want to drive after drinking a 16 oz'er and it gets warm before I finish it. OK allow them to sell the huge drinks in NYC but make them offer smaller drinks at reasonable prices.

Must be NYC is all better now so he can get down to the really important things like determining serving sizes! Whats next, mandatory exercises before work like in China? Maybe he could strike the letter F from the English language so that vulgarity would decrease also, Uck You Bloomey!
The biggest issue with big drinks is the fat person holding it, if they want a bigger drink, they will get one or a few smaller ones! His solution will only create more container refuse and cost fat and thin folks more! No reason to believe that limiting the size will limit the intake.
Thats just foolish thinking to believe this will change anything but profits for the companies selling 2 instead of 1 of their products. Bloomey is a idiot, His FOOG (For our own good) suggestions should be flushed away and him with them, just like a turd.

Hmmm. His Jewish roots may result in Pork Chops and breakfast sausage being the next things "on the chopping block." LOL www.dairyherd.com/e-newsletters/dairy-daily/Dairy-survives-NYC-soda-ban-156404185.htmlMilkshakes escape Bloomberg's sugary drink crackdown Angela Bowman, Staff Writer | Updated: June 1, 2012 There’s a bull's-eye painted on supersized servings of soda and sugary drinks in New York City, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg is using them for target practice. In his latest health-directed proposal, restaurants, movie theaters, food carts and ball parks would be banned from selling soda and other sweetened beverages in containers larger than 16 ounces, according to this MSNBC report. While Bloomberg’s proposal may have ruffled feathers among the soda-drinking communities of the city, dairy lovers can rest assured that milk products will be excempt from the proposal. CBS Local reports that the ban wouldn’t apply to beverages with at least percent 50 milk. Other beverages exempt from the supersized limitation include water, diet soda, coffee, alcohol and drinks with at least 70 percent juice. Though hotly debated, the proposal is likely to be approved by the city’s Board of Health. Once approved, it could take effect as early as March 2013. The proposal is Bloomberg’s latest quest to improve the health of his city, including city-wide smoking bans and requiring fast-food restaurants to highlight calorie information on menu boards. On the TODAY Show, Bloomberg said that the city has reduced the rate of childhood obesity by 5 percent in recent years. The city’s life expectancy is now three years greater than the national average. Milk hasn’t always been exempt from New York City’s battle with obesity. In 2006, the city’s education officials eliminated whole milk from cafeterias in their school district as reported by The New York Times. Just two years ago, education officials also targeted chocolate milk in school cafeterias. Previous attempts to ban chocolate milk in other school districts failed as milk consumption dropped by as much as 75 percent. Read more. ABC News recently covered the weight-loss advantages of dairy, including a University of Tennessee study that showed the benefits of eating dairy products. “Eating three servings of dairy daily significantly reduced body fat in obese subjects," the ABC News report said. "If they restricted calories a bit while continuing with the same dairy servings, it accelerated fat and weight loss.†Sound off: If banning supersized portions of soda and sugary drinks wouldn’t curb obesity, what do you think would help? Banning supersized drinks is not the answer. It's the entire American lifestyle of excesses in everything we eat, drink and do. Getting Americans away from the TV and video games and getting them out to walk and exercise is one answer. Ban TV if ya want to slim down the USA. Ban beer. It is probably as fattening or more so than soda in the long run. Put a size limit and a limit on how many alcoholic drinks can be consumed. You won't be able to buy a 32 oz soda in NYC but you will probably still be able to buy a Margarita that you have to use both hands to pick up. It's all about publicity. He probably goes home at night and drinks a 48 ounce beer or two to wash down a medium pizza with the works. He needs to concentrate on more important issues, and so does the federal govt and their lunch bag inspectors. You won't be able to buy a really big soda in NYC, but you will be able to walk down the street with a 2 quart milkshake and two pound deli sandwich.
