Clipper, here's something in support of auto accidents being the most dangerous part of policing. www.npr.org/2010/12/29/132441719/Traffic-Accidents-Leading-Cause-Of-Police-DeathsYeah, I remember getting paid in $20's and getting fewer that 5 of them per month. When I got to E-5 and made something like $400/month I thought I was rich. As an MP my typical "work clothes" was a Class A uniform which meant dry cleaning and laundry bills. I also got to do some "plain clothes" work which meant that I might spend the morning on airport duty in dress uniform and the afternoon in a suit & tie which I purchased on my own.

Exactly, I am not sure of its still the case, when I retired in 05, an E4 with a Wife and kid was qualified for food stamps! That wasnt that long ago, SSG Pay wasn't that good either.

Unfortunately, it really boils down to what the public can afford to pay, not how much anyone thinks it a job should pay, If the jobs are undervalued, people wont apply that can qualify! That's not the case in the State or County Police recruitment process. There are tons of highly qualified applicants for any open positions. So many in fact that they have routinely employed Affirmative Action Quotas and still filled the cars and bars!
Heres where the figures stack up for our lower ranked Soldiers
RANK <2 Years Experience 4 Years Experience 6 Years Experience Private (E1) $17,611** — — Private (E2) $19,739 $19,739 $19,739 (E3) $20,758 $23,400 $23,400 (E4) $22,993 $26,770 $27,911 Sergeant (E5) $25,081 $29,380 $31,442 SSG (E6) $27,374 $32,742 $34,088
After 20 years, you can retire at half pay but your limited in what types of jobs you can take after! That 17K is going to go nowhere for the retired Staff Sgt and his wife! I retired 6 years ago after 21 years and haven't collected a dime and wont until or if I make it to 62, NY Army National Guard! Then I will get about 20% of a full timers wage or about 6K a year!
I was a SSG Anti Armor Platoon Sgt for 6 years straight, signed for 5 million in Missile systems, 6 HUMMVEE's, Tons of other battle rattle, I was fully responsible for the lives of 4 NCO's, 8 EM's, 1 wet behind the ears Butterbar and a crapload of things that kill instantly and I'm only worth 34K a year full-time, 6K retired when a Statey is worth 100K retired, that seems a bit uneven wouldn't you say???
That was my choice but I think it sucks, 60%+ of our National Guard has served in front line combat, some of them multiple times, My step brother is on his 4th tour in 8 years! Our blood is the same damn color red as a Troopers or a Full Time Army Grunt when shot between the eyes!
The ones that have it now should enjoy what they have earned, what was promised to them for their service. Future LEP's beware, the state is bankrupt if you hadn't noticed. Maybe you better get your commission and head off to the Air Force, still half the pay but the food pretty good and they dont even have to blouse their boots or put on warpaint!
