www.uticaod.com/latestnews/x219199565/Tornado-apparently-touches-down-in-upstate-NY Print Comment AMSTERDAM — A tornado has apparently touched down in the Amsterdam area, one week after Irene caused flooding and damage in New York. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says there have been no reports of serious injuries after the touch down Sunday. But he says there are reports of damage to structures. Cuomo says he dispatched state police and search and rescue personnel to the scene who were already in the area on Irene assignments. Power crews are also on scene to restore electricity in case customers were affected. Montgomery County, where Amsterdam is located, is among the counties eligible for federal disaster assistance after the tropical storm last week. At least 20 other counties are also eligible for funding. Copyright 2011 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed Rather sad when the Associated Press covers the story, and it ends up being picked up and covered with photos on our LOCAL news here in Tennessee, 700 miles away, but the OD can't send a reporter to follow up or take photos when it is only about 60 or so miles to Amsterdam NY from Utica. They may have a reporter on the scene today, and with the new practice of printing the OD in Binghamton or Johnson City or wherever, you MAY see the coverage about Thursday or so. Ya gotta love it.

I bought the OD yesterday. I swear it took me less than 20 min. to read it from one end to the other. And I'm including Price Chopper's flyer. The rest I toss because it's a waste of my time to look & see what Kmart, etc. has on sale. If they think people are going to keep buying this crap just for the coupons & the flyers, they are mistaken. As soon as people smarten up & realize that the same couplons, etc. can be found in the Syracuse paper, & there's even some news to read, there goes the OD.

Although our printed newpaper here in Bristol is still a viable publication and well edited and published, I have seriously considered simply reading it on line and subscribing only to the print edition on weekends. We have the option, as do OD customers of subscribing for delivery only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as an option to receive only the Sunday paper. We do use coupons quite often, and Kathy truly enjoys browsing through the Sunday inserts for bargains. We shop for most of our clothes and many other items at Penny's, Sears, and Belk's. They all have a coupons weekly.
I read the ads also and compare prices on different items at different stores. Since Sears and Kmart combined or merged, I avoid Sears for everything but tools and garden equipment. Seems that BOTH stores have gone to hell as a result of the merger. I was never a fan of Kmart and their cheaply made crap anyway. I was looking for a pair of pruners not long ago. I had bought a pair at Sears a few years ago, so I went to Sears. I also happened to drop into Kmart to buy laundry soap on sale and checked there. Strangely enough, the same shear that I looked at in the Sears store was more expensive in Kmart. Out of curiosity, I am going to take the time to compare some prices on the Craftsman tools that are available at Kmart.
We used to use on-line coupons, but lately there has been a flurry of counterfeit coupons being presented at the stores so many stores won't take the on-line coupons for items like pepsi and coke so we are back to clipping paper coupons again.

Here it is. Action doesn't start until 5:30 into the video. I don't know who she is or why she was sitting in her car recording.

Well, our newscast described her as an "amateur storm chaser" passing through the area. She was quoted as saying something along the lines of she never thought she would be that close to a tornado when she pulled into the service plaza to ride out the heavy rains and winds.
Now if I were a storm chaser, I would pay more attention to the term "chaser" and would only put myself in a position of FOLLOWING a storm that had already passed, and then at a respectable distance, lol.
When I first watched the video, my first question was "Well! Where the hell is the tornado?" The five and a half minute delay caught me unaware of what she was viewing from her vantage point.

Our paper has thinned out alot also and and last month (unless you want to pay for a copy .25cents) they dropped the TV guide. Can always go on line and see what is on tv (not much) so I channel surf alot. Wegmans now puts out their flyers every 2 weeks but they might as well not bother. It looks the same from week to week. it never was great flyer to begin with and they only advertise their own brand.
No way would I be sitting in my car if I saw a tornado approaching me. Holy Moly!!!!

I guess it was raining too hard to run inside. I don't think she expected to see a funnel cloud, just a deluge that cut visibility and made it dangerous to drive.

I'm sure I saw a wedge shaped cloud in the video, but am not sure I saw a funnel. (By the way, I was just leaving my daughter's house near Schenectady and could see a dark mass of clouds on the western horizon at exactly that time.) Wonder what Westmo thinks. He might also be able to tell us how the Weather Bureau will confirm it. I think they check the radar at the time of the report looking for a specific configuration of winds and velocities. There's a certain signature that can be seen on the radar. Westmo could explain it better. They might also drive out there and look for circular wind movement evidence by the direction of downed trees, etc.

Our news caster said "a tornado was confirmed by the National Weather Service in the upstate NY area." They went on to cover tornadoes in Alabama and other storm activity spawned by the tropical storm that was wandering through the Southeast. We are supposed to see the heaviest rain tomorrow. It has poured on and off all day today, and when it wasn't pouring, it simply drizzled and was miserable all day. They are experiencing flash flooding in the mountains around Chattanooga right now, and my cousin in Kennesaw Ga said they had a tornado touch down in Powder Springs, just North of Atlanta this afternoon.

Is Kantor still threatening to hold up FEMA relief funds? Tell that to the folks up in Vermont. I've heard that dead bodies & caskets are starting to show up from cemeteries that were washed away now that the water is starting to recede. Nice guy that Kantor. Course, it's not his State, so what the hell does he care?

Irene? You're kidding me!"Horrifyingly, the storm ripped into cemeteries, tumbling caskets and their contents over the landscape." "The rescue and restoration operations in Vermont are beyond the abilities of a small state with a population of barely 630,000 people. Simply assembling the raw materials and equipment for the kind of rebuilding Vermont is going to need over the next months and even years would be impossible without the cooperation of outsiders." "And in particular that means without FEMA, the often-maligned but indispensable Federal Emergency Management Agency. Yes, there are times in its past - think Katrina - when FEMA's had a well-deserved reputation as a patronage haven short on competence. Yet the current FEMA management has generally been getting high marks from governors (Republicans and Democrats alike) whose states have needed help."www.concordmonitor.com/article/277728/irene-youre-kidding-me?CSAuthResp=1315397925%3A6tffcnlca54bq5k6h9llb6tb53%3ACSUserId|CSGroupId%3Aapproved%3A91B70E50E5408D693A48163A5C798994&CSUserId=94&CSGroupId=1
