I've been following the storm up the coast and listening as state and county officials warn people to evacuate. Especially in the case of New York City, where indications are that some 250,000 are to be evacuated, I wonder where they are going. It's great if they have relatives farther inland, but not everyone is so lucky. I remember someone I met on the Outer Banks some years ago told me he and his wife and kids packed a few things in the car and took off one morning when they were told to leave in advance of a hurricane. Following the evacuation route they figured they would simply drive until they found a motel with a vacancy. They soon realized that on the main roads an empty motel room might not show up before Illinois. So they began to travel ever more secondary roads until they were on back roads. Finally, three days and five tanks of gas later and still not having found a room, they heard on the radio the emergency was over and they drove home. "Next time," he said," we'll go to somewhere like Hershey Park and have fun."
I've been perusing the news stories on the New York City evacuations, but have not yet discovered any destination suggestions from Bloomberg or Cuomo. Has anyone heard anything on that score?
