Alan, I'm not mad at any church. In fact, I've been involved in a number of projects and seminars in the Catholic church over the years and have friends in the priesthood. I am not a practicing Catholic, however.

Only asked because both of you have such keen insight when anything religious comes up I just did't want either of you to have been hurt some way by a few crazy priests or nuns. I met a nun a long time ago in a AA meeting, I new her from the past and was so surprized. I guess they are human.

Alan, much of my personal beliefs come from sitting around the tables at AA in the 70's and 80's. It was there that I discovered that it was okay to simply have an individual walk with "God" or a personal relationship with a higher power or "deity" ( a word learned in AA also, that relieves any necessity to further define that entity as it relates to our lives)without having any affiliation with a church or religious group.
I also met one nun and several priests around the tables at AA. One priest in particular attended meetings down in the valley, and was a great help to me in my early days of sobriety. Alcoholism seemed at the time to run rampant among priests, and I don't mean that to demean the church. At that time there was a facility there in CNY that was dedicated to the rehabilitation of alcoholic priests. Lets face the fact, that the priesthood can be a very lonely life. sequestered in a rectory,
My personal feelings were that the Catholic Church's beliefs, to me, were pretty archaic, repetitive, and outdated, but I would imagine that my dislikes are precisely the history and tradition that is MOST desirable to the average devout Catholics. I don't hold any hard feelings against the church itself. I have opinions concerning the sex scandals, and the alleged cover up, by church officials, but no specific grudge against the church itself.
Having sat around those tables yourself, I am sure you remember well, that there were catholics, protestants, Jews, agnostics, athiests and people with other affiliations or no affiliations whatsoever. Many discovered or redefined their concept of a supreme being when they became sober enough to formulate a clear thought, or realize that their head was clear enough to contemplate such things.

Here's a good place to start regarding the humanity of Brother Jesse.monkinthecellar.blogspot.com/2010/12/xx-yearning.htmlGo forward from there (newer posts).

I was reminded of this thread yesterday while reading the local newspaper. I didn't get the name or details, but a minister somewhere, while performing a wedding ceremony is quoted as saying "Marriage is a blessing to some, a burden to many, and a challenge for all who enter into it." Pretty much covers it doesn't it? lol
Personally I never succeeded at it, but I certainly envy those that have stayed the course and met the challenges. Congrats.
