I would say that budgetary concerns and assaults on state employee's benefits and pay are becoming reality to those that have rode the gravy train. I hope they catch the perpetrator before anything can be done to harm innocent children.
Gonna be a lot more of this sort of thing going on around the entire country before all is said and done. Budget cuts always start with public employee jobs and bennies, as they should, but that is only the START, not the end all answer to all the budget problems and it needs to start at the top, not with those who actually perform the menial daily tasks that keeps the government running. There are a lot of spending issues at all levels of government aside from payroll costs and employee benefits. There are also many places to make cuts besides public safety, and education. Everyone wants to make a loud noise and show of Las Vegas quality, but nobody wants to do anything except promise and then barely scratch the surface. We need someone that only WANTS to serve one term, that will put aside political aspirations and take a serious whack at upper management and bureaucracy.
NY State would do well to start by doing away with their "Authorities" who are independent, out of control, and expensive. Look at the Thruway Authority as a good example. Why would those in charge of a toll road be able to raise tolls to dredge a recreational canal and maintain locks? Check out the Power Authority. The parties and dinners and picnics, and trips to NYC alone are extravagant and ridiculous in scope and cost. They play a critical role in power distribution, but they are like prima donnas when it comes to working conditions and perks.
Pretty sad to have to be wary of putting your child on the school bus because a disgruntled state employee is threatening to go postal.
