Why can't a person buy two or three stalks of celery. That is all I needed for a meal I wanted to make but Walmart won't let a person take on a few stalks from the bunch. Why I don't understand. I had the manager as well as a few people around me this morning as I attempted to take three stalks. I said to the manager than why is it ok to have a whole melon cut in half or take only one or two banana's off the bunch. I see people stripping off leaves on cabbage and no one says anything. He was very frustrated with me. I was glad my medications were working.

Whenever I buy celery, I buy the whole bunch with the leaves and tops. I used whatever celery stalks I need for the particular recipe I am making at the time, and then I plan around it, and chop some into tuna salad, use some in tossed salads, and when it starts to go down hill, and get rubbery, I make a soup, using tops and all, along with some chicken, onions, garlic, and parsley.
I think the reason that you can't buy 3 stalks of celery is because it is sold by the bunch. Bananas are sold by the pound, as is cabbage. That makes it practical to sell smaller amounts and to break off a couple of bananas. I have seen here in the South that some stores will allow you to purchase 1/2 a dozen of eggs, or 1/2 pound of butter, which I always found to be strange when I look in the dairy case and find two quarters of butter in an open box, or an egg carton split in half and 6 eggs left in the remaining half.
Hell Kathy and I consider ourselves "almost out of eggs" if we get down to a dozen, haha.

I can buy one or two potatoes, don;t have to buy the whole bag. Even carrots can be bought seperatly. Red onions can be bought seperately but not smaller sized yellow onions they are in a bag.

A new gourmet coffee shop is openning in Utica. The building is new and very nice looking. It even has a drive through. The place is located just before the turn into the Utica Business park on Burrstone.

I feel your pain my friend. I bet some of it has to do with the coding in the cash registers, and the ability to ring the items up also. Computers are supposed to be so damned smart, but they can't divide the price of a bag of onions by whatever portion you wish to buy and come up with a price. they only scan and tabulate what the "dumb" human puts into the program.
Try lightly rubbing a black crayon on the veins or fibers at the base of the celery stalk and see if the register will read it as a barcode, haha. That should really blow the mind of the manager at WalMart.
Have you ever noticed that in late years, the young people at the register have a hard time even calculating how much change you have coming back? I can't remember the last time a clerk actually counted back my change. They have to read the amount due to you off the register, and God forbid you should give them some loose change to bring the amount of change to even dollars. They are many times completely lost and in a panic, haha.
Retail is becoming so automated that it is no longer customer friendly in some cases. It is faster, and in some cases more efficient, but NOT customer friendly.
I hope your day gets better as it goes along my friend. sounds like it has been less than the best so far. Hell, that's part of what we are here for, so let'r rip buddy. One of the functions of the forum is to bring friends together and to support one another when one of us is having a bad day. The other members are great "sounding boards" and friends to vent to.

don't they have a bulk section where you shop. you can usually buy any quantity you like including small yellow onions. We have them in Wegmans loose and bagged. Have you thought of a farmers market where the produce is cheaper and possibly you can get a better deal (but doubt you'll get your celery by the stalk)
Clipper scarry isn't it that the cashiers today can't count change back an should when giving you your money back .......not just handing you a wad that they pulled out of the cash register. I've even had some practically throw it at me. I don't think Danny would appreciate hearing that as they are noted for their customer service and don't train them to do that.

We have to not only buy for the recipe we are wanting to cook, but also have to plan the menu around the ingredients that we buy in order to utilize the rest of the excess left over. We buy whole pork loins. I cut a couple of small roasts from them, and the remainder is cut into boneless chops which we can pound out for snitzel, cut up for mushroom stew or stir frying, or pan fry. I also grind some occasionally, but usually I buy the pork butts for grinding for my sausage recipes and for meatloaf mix.
I sympathize with ya Concerned. It is very difficult to shop for only one or two people, and a freezer is almost a necessity to getting the most for your money. (can't freeze celery though, LOL)
Another use for the excess celery left from a recipe, is to roast it in the oven with root veggies, such as carrots, turnips, and parsnips, and with squash such as summer squash or zukes. Anytime we have any left over fresh veggies that start to go south, I put them in a baking dish with some herbs and spices, drizzle them with a little good quality olive oil, cover with foil, and roast them off for a side dish. It works for everything from beets to broccoli.

Last month when I cashed out at Walmart the young lady gave me back $ 8.27. As I was about to leave and the next customer was already bumping me on my butt with her cart, I said to the casher that she gave me the wrong change I was supposed to get back $18.27. Well she had to wait to open the register and the lady behind me was in a hurry so the casher finally gets the drawer open takes my $8.00 and gives me back$ 20..... I hope she wasn't fired because I had no intention going threw all that again. lol
