Not me ... the guy who wrote this article ....You Can’t Friend Me, I Quit!By Steve Tuttle Feb 4, 2009 On Facebook's fifth anniversary, a not-so-fond farewell.I was a late convert to Facebook, the social-networking site that turned five years old Wednesday. I joined about a year ago at age 47, swept up in the massive wave of people turning the corner to the back nine of life, and pitifully trying to do what comes so naturally to our sons and daughters. My own 16-year-old, Grace, literally cried from embarrassment when I told her I was signing up, and she begged me through her tears not to do it. When it was clear that I was serious, she made me promise never to "friend" her. Since I didn't know what that meant at the time, I agreed. Last week I redeemed myself in her eyes, because I signed off of Facebook forever—or at least until Tuesday. I had one of those Hallmark movie moments. I was sitting here at work thinking up my next pithy "status update," which is where you broadcast to all your online buddies in a few words what you're up to at that very moment—and finally came to my senses. "What the hell have I become?" I cried. More:www.newsweek.com/id/183180I THINK I'm on Facebook. Someone invited me; I haven't checked it lately. But this article has relevance beyond Facebook.

Just don't have the time for all that stuff. Sh*t, I have enough problems trying to find the time for the forum here. Let me know if ya see me on there.

I play Texas Hold 'Em on facebook. I only use myspace to play Mafia Wars. That's about it. I don't use the social networking sites much anymore. I lost interest when my ex used it to cyber stalk and harass me.

I'm on facebook, but I've only been there a short time. I'm actually having fun with it. At first I thought I wouldn't like it but I've found that I do. Of course, I'm one of those odd people who isn't out to collect friends...I have 44 friends at the moment and they are all people I know in some way, shape or form, and most are actually friends. There are a few from high school who I haven't seen in 20 years but I accepted them because we were in high school together, and then there's a girlfriend of a friend who I don't know well, and 2 other people that I've only talked to online, but other than that they are people who I enjoy spending time with and talking to and know live and in person. :-) I will say, though, that I am getting tired of the cyber snowball fights...people can stop throwing snowballs at me anytime.

Kim, I'm not sure how Facebook works, actually. Every once in a while I get an email that someone has written on my wall (or is that Myspace?) But I don't hear much directly sent to me. The people who "friended" me are not close friends, for the most part, and so I don't think to check up on them. Do you feel that Facebook is better than Myspace? Or the opposite? Also, I hear about folks find old buddies from college and high school, but I don't know how to go about doing that. It seems to me I searched for a lookup facility and didn't find one.

I love facebook! It can be a bit much with all of the status updates and people sending you drinks, coffee, gifts, etc., but it has been a great tool to reconnect with old friends.

I prefer facebook to myspace. I don't use my myspace very much at all...seems to be aimed at much younger people and you can't do things like chat right within myspace. You can find friends by going to 'friends' and entering either their name and where they used to live or live now, or their email address, or you can search schools. You could put your email password into facebook and they'll search your address book, but I wouldn't do that...I'm not giving anyone my password! Right now there seems to be a viral app of some sort going around. I was sent 'tasty food' using a gift app by several people, and none of them actually sent it. Also, I think I might have sent some 'tasty food' to people, but I didn't. The app cannot be removed. It's annoying. Other than that, though, I currently have no complaints.

Thanks, Kim. I didn't know I could search by school. Maybe that's why I hear many people talking about finding their friends from school. I'll look for that facility on Facebook.

For this reason I've decided to accept no apps. Normally when someone "sends" you something, it appears in the top right corner of the page. I noticed the "tasty food" only in notifications at the bottom of the page and did not click on it. Mostly because at that point, I was "app-ed out". I did have a few people tell me that I sent them a "kick" (my husband said it was a kick him in the nuts), which I did not send. There definitely is a viral app going around. I went into applications setting and weeded out a lot of ridiculous stuff and then changed my password for good measure.

I just noticed that someone on Facebook sent me a note saying "turn off the games." I guess she thought I sent something to her, but I didn't. Is that what the virus looks like? That a particular person sent you something? If so, I'll cancel my account, which was dormant anyway. I don't know the woman that well, and have no idea what the "game" was. Sheesh, that could be embarrassing.

Dave, it seems to be a spoof of an app. You just have to be very careful what you click on. I've decided I'm not longer going to accept apps, either, unless I'm really sure about it. I'll use facebook for other stuff, but the apps were getting annoying, anyway.

I just checked Facebook again and the woman wrote me a note of explanation. I know her husband's name is also Dave, but didn't think her comment could be addressed to him, because it was on my wall. It was indeed meant for him. I don't know how it came to me. I hope they don't get romantic on my wall.
