Our air quality is rated at "moderate risk" today. Luckily we are on the outer perimeter of the affected area. I was wondering yesterday what effect the rain has on the smoke and haze. It must clean the air while depositing the particulates on the ground. We have seen the haze over the past few days, but it has never really been bad enough to be able to smell the smoke as PB says has been the case in the Utica area.
As far as yesterday's cancellations, they became quite redundant when the activities cancelled would have been cancelled anyhow due to the rain. The haze was quite noticeable on Tuesday but today I can see the mountains in the distance clearly.
I just spoke with my oldest son who lives in Ohio. He said yesterday the sky there was yellow and people were advised to stay indoors and to avoid leaving pets outside for more than 15 minutes. He is on his way to Michigan on business and it is still very hazy but not as bad as yesterday. He is a quality control engineer and works for a company that develops and administers quality control programs for companies and vendors associated with the auto industry. Needless to say he is not looking forward to the air quality that is probably present in the Detroit area.
How bad is it in Utica today?

Right now it's rather pleasant with partly sunny skies, breezy & temps in the 60's. I worked on the deck sanding off some stain that was peeling. Went to WM for a tank sprayer to apply deck cleaner. The thing was a piece of junk so back it goes tomorrow. Had to apply the deck cleaner with a paint roller then scrubbed it in using a brush. Bought stain at J-K, $50./gallon + tax.
I mention this because I haven't been bothered by the smoke at all, but I'm sure others were who have breathing issues. I have a feeling that unless those fires are extinguished this issue may plague us all summer. Hope not.

cnycentral.com/weather/breathing-in-wildfire-smoke-comparable-to-smoking-3-to-11-cigarettes-a-day#All I can say is WOW! Comparable to smoking 3-11 cigarettes? Fortunately for us the air quality index reading for our area is also in the moderate range for today. www.accuweather.com/en/us/bristol/24201/air-quality-index/335712One map I looked at showed the Utica area and also NYC as being in the "good" range, showing green on a map, while another showed moderate, showing yellow on a map. Reported levels seem to vary between sources of the data. The air quality must be much improved in NYC. The Today Show has a huge crowd outside on the Plaza this morning for a concert by some popular artist that I have never heard of. They showed people lined up along sidewalks stretching for blocks from the Plaza itself.

Now we can breathe easy until the wind shifts in our direction bringing in the smoky air. They need to extinguish that wild fire fast...... I winder if I can sue Canada for damages. I had to use my rescue inhaler several times these past days and my Doctor had me add one more puff on morning inhaler and evening inhaler so now it is 3 puffs twice a day. She said just for a month or until this clears up

We never saw the potentially dangerous levels that Utica did, but I look back now and see that the couple of days when the smokey haze was most evident I coughed and had a dry and somewhat sore throat. I attributed it to my normal allergies, but looking back it was those couple of days when my allergies were really noticeable.

I was surprised by the yellow ting in the air because of light being bent by the smoke. Amazing I hope it does not come back but we are not safe until the fires in Canada are all over.
