It seems like every time I open a news page from the CNY area there has been at least one or more fatalities as a result of a snowmobile crash and with few exceptions it is a matter of excessive speed causing the person to lose control, leave the trail, and smash into a tree.
In the 70's and 80's I was an avid snowmobiler. The last sled I owned was 440cc Scorpion that would go 65 or 70mph. Now they make sleds that boast close to 1000cc's that will reach speeds over 100mph, and there are nitwits out there that insist on pushing them to their limits. In too many cases the adrenalin over rules common sense. Even on the most well groomed trail 55 or 60 is more than plenty of speed. Anything more than that should be reserved for an open field or a frozen lake. Sadly hitting an immoveable object such as a tree at 70 or 80 mph on a snowmobile is likely to be the LAST lapse in judgement a person is going to experience.
I still have pleasant memories of winding through the woods, enjoying nature while riding a snowmobile, and of flying across flat fields with the wind in my face, I can't even imagine going full throttle on a public trail with curves, bumps, and other machines and traffic. I am sorry for the rant, but I am just struck with sadness and sympathy for the loved ones who are left to mourn the senseless deaths that seem to be more numerous in recent days.
We have the same scenarios here in our area, but instead of snowmobiles they involve motorcycles. Crotch rockets that can exceed 50mph.
