Syracuse police union will 'go down fighting' over city's vaccine or test policy

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — As more than half of the Syracuse police force remains unvaccinated against COVID-19, some officers have threatened to leave their jobs if the city mandates vaccines for its employees.
Starting Tuesday, city employees must either show proof of vaccination or get tested every week. Mayor Ben Walsh previously said a full mandate with no testing option was still possible, and the Syracuse police union said it would take legal action if that happens.
"We're going to go down swinging on this topic if we have to," said Joseph Moran, president of the Syracuse Police Benevolent Association (PBA). "I've had a number of officers approach me and make it absolutely clear that if a COVID vaccine mandate is imposed they will retire or they will resign."
A recent survey showed 84% of the department opposes a vaccine mandate. Some do not even want to undergo weekly testing, and the union is against punishing officers who refuse.
About 44% of the department is vaccinated, and Moran said he would rather the city focus on vaccinating other community members.
The PBA membership has a higher vaccination rate than the citizens we serve," he said. "We would like to see the mayor focus his attention on his constituents and stop placing such an emphasis on the police department."
Walsh stands by his decision on vaccine and testing requirements for city employees, saying it is in the police department's best interest.
"When we look at the staffing in the police department, COVID is as much as a threat to those staffing levels as anything," Walsh said. "We need our officers vaccinated."

Wow I thought any police department would be more intelligent than this and would all want to be vaccinated just because they risk such a high level of being infected from the public they serve. Plus they are highly more likely to infect their loves ones as they return home each day or night from duty. I am amazed how selfish people are becoming. It is me me me. No regard for the other person. That old this is my body and I can do what I want thing. You hear that a lot from the pro abortion people who are all screaming it in Texas.
