DEERFIELD, N.Y. -- WKTV celebrated 70 years on the air on Dec. 1, spending the past seven decades serving the Mohawk Valley and surrounding areas.
General Manager Steve McMurray says relative to other hometown news stations, WKTV has enjoyed longevity that not many others see.
“For many people who grew up in this area, this is the only television station they’ve really ever known, you know, when you sign on in 1949, that makes you one of the oldest television stations in the country, and in a business that changes so frequently, that type of longevity is pretty rare,” said McMurray.
WKTV anchor, Kristen Copeland, grew up in the area and says she remembers watching Bill Worden on the 6 p.m. news every night.
“I think one of my favorite, earliest memories is…our ‘proud to serve’ moment in our six o’clock broadcast. And it was Bill Worden delivering that ‘we are proud to serve’ and then when I got to say it, that really struck me,” said Copeland.
Jason Powles, the evening anchor at WKTV, says it’s a privilege to share the news with the community, but also gives the news team a sense of duty.
“It’s a responsibility, to sit here, and bring you the news, weather and sports every day. And it’s something that we treasure here,” said Powles.
WKTV NEWChannel 2 is committed to continuing to serve the community as the local station “Where the News Comes First.”
I saw the old step van that was their mobile unit and I could actually remember seeing that truck on the road. It is a mid fifties vintage. I guess there are a few of us that can still remember watching channel 13 before they became channel 2. The 6 o'clock news was seldom missed in our house. We would eat our supper and mom and dad would retire to the living room to watch the news while I washed the supper dishes. I won't rehash the memory of watching channel 13 on a 12 inch round screen, haha.

I just came in from bowling 3 games on my Tuesday night league. I had to slide down out of the truck and hobble to the house like a 90 yr old. Slinging a 14lb bowling ball for 30 frames seems to get harder each year. I used to bowl 4 or 5 nights a week and I threw a 16lb ball.
