Why Is It So *&%# Cold? Come Warm Up In The Answer Vortex January 30, 20194:24 PM ET This can explain it: The polar vortex is a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding the Earth's North and South poles. "Vortex" refers to the counterclockwise flow of air that helps keep the colder air close to the poles (left). During winter in the Northern Hemisphere, the polar vortex can shift, sending cold arctic air southward over the United States (right). It shifted far enough South to leave us with a present temperature of 16 degrees here in Tennessee.

When I was a kid it was called a "cold snap" and my mom would yell at us if we didn't zip our coats up. Polar Vortex makes a much better headline.
Yesterday the Today Show had Dylan in St. Paul doing their mandatory "killer cold" shot in front of the Winter Carnival ice sculptures. The camera panned back and there was a person looking at the sculptures. Dylan called her over. Turns out she was from International Falls where it was -36F yesterday so she wasn't afraid of being out in -20. She did have her coat zipped and her ears covered.
