Ya know we worked together on the program Pat Johnson has at the YWCA.
He seemed like an intelligent man, albeit a little on the "uppity" side in some respects, very well educated and well spoken.
I just can't see being Pastor of a church where the overwhelming majority doesn't want you. I mean......what's the point? I wouldn't want to be in a place where a third of the people didn't want me there!!!
What is the point of fighting for it?!?!

Maybe his salary has something to do with it.

NO doubt Concerned! It is a fairly large congregation, and he has been there long enough to have garnered enough raises to make his income quite substantial.
Pretty sad though when a church becomes a "political battleground". Kinda takes the shine off of the "brotherly love thing" doesn't it???

I don't think any church can survive today on just 'brotherly love' , the economy and politics seem to rule.

When going to church gets to the point that a minimum 'take' in the collection, becomes an "admission charge" to hear a sermon, and when the sermon becomes aimed at raising funds for church building funds and such, instead of teaching the scriptures, we have lost the true meaning of religion.
Jesus preached from a rock, and now we have to have "crystal cathedrals" with a "fellowship" hall bigger than the municipal auditorium to "draw" worshipers. I think God's work has been lost in the shuffle to make church a social organization and a club rather than a place of worship.
I used to pledge to the church when I was catholic, and it was to maintain the church building, pay for the costs of heating the school, and maintaining the rectory. Boy was I foolish in believing all of that. The larger portion of the money, most likely went to the diocese, and to the vatican, and was invested in making the catholic church one of the richest entities in the world. What is wrong with that picture??
Church has been lost in the shuffle. It is no longer simply a place to go to learn, and to find peace in the Lord on a Sunday morning. It has become a business first and a place of solace and love second.

my church (mt carmel combined now with blessed sacrament) is nothing more than a showcase for the quior(sp) and its various divas you cant even have a moment of silence for contemplation or prayer because these egomaniacs have to play and sing from beginning to end they have one woman who cantors whose singing is so bad she couldnt carry a tune if they tatooed one on her ass and there is another woman a soprano who literally takes over every song and creates her own solo. her voice is so shrill that when she hits certain notes my balls actually hurt. i get more spirituality from a day in the woods hunting fishing or wandering.

Corner, I wanna steal those lines! You do have a way with words. Please write something up so you can join us on "More Stories!" I'll even do your spell-checking for you! And I know exactly where you're at, I get so tired of the music ... all the same tunes and chords, and Peter, Paul and Mary folk music. Still, these many years later! www.windsweptpress.com/cheated.htm

dave its worse than that we are still largely an italian parish and the music ranges from african 1 balck family in church to cambodian 2 families and vietnamese 3 families then the quoir director comes down just before mass to try to teachus some new verse and he has this portable mike with that i rreally want to shove up his ass but if you check out his mannerisms etc he really might enjoy that way too much.. now i can play some wicked blues guitar but cant sing so i dont....the priest likes his labatts blue and i think gets snockered before the services and some of his sermons are from another planet... which can be a good thing now that the vatican has given us permission to believe in ufo's cause if were the best that god can do boy are we really foookayed...dont even get me gooing on the lesbian nun mobile...then ther is the convicted pedophile who got thrown out of his church in nymills youll know who he is because he writes to the od compaining about being a registered sex offender( really nobody would have known except for me if he kept his mouth shut and didnt get interviewed by wktv} but hes part of the song fest beatin on his african tom tom couldnt keep the beat in a month of sundays then they get him singing solos no low profile here.my nephew is in the quoir told him between the quoir director and the convict if you drop something let it lie dont bendover for any reason.

Corner, great story!! I took the liberty of giving it a quick rewrite and formated it into a "More Stories!" article. The byline says "By corner, as told to dave," but we can change that and anything you want. We can even use your real name. Maybe we should change the name of the church, although I'd like to keep the "BS" part. I haven't indexed the web page for the general public yet, but you can view it at: www.windsweptpress.com/bendover.htmWhen you get there, don't forget you can also click for the PDF version, which I think is always nicer to view and certainly to print. Let me know what you think.
