Whatever the costs of living in upstate NY, I will be back there as soon as my dad is gone and we can sell this place. I want to spend the remainder of my years fishing the West Canada, and upstate NY lakes and streams. I want to hunt deer in the southerntier, and the Adirondacks. I want to park our 5th wheel under the pines at Lake Durant State Park, and enjoy the song of the loons in the evening. I want to take our annual pilgrimage up the Northway to Lake George and beyond, and back down Route 28, through Blue Mountain Lake, and Old Forge, enjoying the colors, and the clear waters of the Adirondack lakes."
Yor sound just like my brother. He hunts, fishes, camps etc. He has 25 acres of private land in the southern tier. He doesn't limit himself to that area only.

We are forced in todays world to give up our Drivers License, Address and Social Security number for everything. We spend millions a year trying to prevent Identity Theft, but ironically we make it so easy for the dishonest people today.

I refuse to give out my social security number to anyone other than places who legitimately need it, like banks that I'm doing business with, employers, etc. I refused to list my son's social security number on his school registration, I refused to give it out on some sort of service I was signing up for that had no need to have it...I just won't do it unless it's legit. Nobody has fought with me about that yet. I say no, they say ok. Sometimes I've been asked why and I tell them 'because it's none of your business' and they don't bother me about it again.

He not only DID NOT ask us for ID, but he held the door open for us and said 'have a good time ma'am and sir.'.Shit. Sigh. Kim, I'm sure you misinterpreted his intention. He no doubt thought you regal rather than old. BTW, I agree with your handling of your SS numbers.

Regal! I like that. As long as I'm not a Buick Regal. ;-)

Don't know about you, Clipper, but I'm definitely getting ragged. And feeling it, too. Coming home after the grass season's first growth spurt and realizing that the time for yard chores was well upon us, I spent Saturday and Sunday and a bit of time today out there on the range. But this is the first year in a long time this early in the season I've cleared the branches and debris from the lilacs and forsythia and what-not that poke me in the eye and rip my shirts as I ride the edges on my lawn tractor. Working my way around the back forty with pruning saw in one hand and nippers in the other, I cut and throw, coming back later to gather and reap. Damn, those wild rose bushes have sneaky thorns! I usually curse and swear at the bushes most of the season before I finally get around to this chore. But now it's done and I'll enjoy smooth going while I spend $4 per gallon to cut the grass. DO NOT mention fertilizer in front of me.!

Sshhhh! I won't mention fertilizer. How about 18 bucks a bag for 3 bags of grub control?? We have japanese beetle grubs down here that are laid in the lawn, and develop over the winter. If you don't kill them in the spring, the skunks will have a field day digging small divots out of your lawn until about the end of June when the beetles hatch. If I don't kill the grubs, I have to spend the summer fighting with the beetles on everything in my garden. I know the feeling with the "ragged" part taking over the rough and ready of a few years ago, haha. My worst nightmare since shattering 3 vertebrae a few years ago, is trimming with the gas powered weed eater. For some reason, that muscle action really tears me up. I am crippled for a day and a half every time I do it, haha. Hey my friend, you could live in Tennessee. The grass grows so damn fast down here, if you don't mow every 4 days it gets ahead of you. I actually enjoy mowing the lawn. My 3/4 acre yard is just the right size to keep me busy without wearing me out, haha. Enjoy the outdoors. You have been hiding from the snow all winter, it's time to get some sunshine. The thing I think I like most about being retired, is probably something that you have also discovered. If ya don't want to finish it today, the hell with it, there is always tomorrow or the next day, hehehe! If you really don't want to finish it at all, you hire the kid down the road to finish it, and you pull up a lawn chair and watch him work!

You know, part of my law refuses to grow. We've been trying for 4 years, and it's just dirt. No grass will grow! We gave up and planted some trees there. I hope they grow! The rest of the grass isn't really grass at all...it's weeds, and those weeds grow about a foot a day! Grrrr!

Yup, a friend once told me he that during his first month of retirement, he got off his lawn tractor halfway across the lawn and just left it there overnight! Ahh, but old habits die hard. Hanging around the house more than before when working, I get to look at the yard more and see things needing to be done. Still, I'm not as crazy about it as some neighbors, I've noticed. The couple across the road really need to get a life somewhere off the ground, I sometimes think, but they do in fact seem to enjoy their puttering activities. There was a widow down in the village years ago ... and I'm not making this up ... who had a small patch of grass between her front porch and the street. When she tired of mowing, she had it paved and rolled out green indoor/outdoor carpeting on it in the summer. We called her Mrs. AstroTurf.

Hahaha! I wonder how much 3/4 of an acre of astroturf costs, with installation included.
Today's project was taking down the thirty or forty foot maple tree in the front yard that was threatening to uproot and topple Sunday in the 50 or 60 mile an hour winds. Took about 3 hours and a lot of sweat and grunting for this tired old body.
It stood about 12 feet from the front porch and about 6 feet from the corner edge of the driveway. I had to be careful which way the pieces toppled as I topped it out and then dropped the last 20 feet or so across the driveway without hitting the truck or 5th wheel.
Oh well. My raggedy old ass will sleep well tonight, haha! Hot shower was great. Thank God for an 80 gallon water heater, cause I let that hot water run on my sore back for about 15 minutes. LOL.
Kathy helped drag limbs and stack it up for the county to pick up. She is in the jacuzzi now, and I expect she will do the same thing I did. Loritab and a muscle relaxer hehe.
Between my shattered and calcified vertebrae and her missing discs and the two rods and 8 screws in her back, we make quite a crippled pair. LOL
