www.msn.com/en-us/travel/tripideas/11-surviving-drive-ins-you-can-visit-this-summer/ar-BBlgzox?ocid=U146DHPWe actually still have several drive-in movie theaters in the area that are still open and operating, but the Moonlight Drive-in listed in this article is the oldest and most nostalgic of all of them. Driving by it at dusk always reminds me of driving past the Kallet on Cary's Corners years ago. The brightly lit marquee and the lighting along the drive way brings back memories of going to the Kallet and getting there early so my younger siblings could ride the kiddie rides before the movie began. There are still plenty of drive-ins in the South, but I would have to imagine that their survival has been strongly supported by the climate and the ability to show movies outdoors even in winter for the most part.

I'd be interested in more info on how they came to name The Spud Drive-In. Yeah, Idaho, I know, but ... And here's the Kallet we all remember. The fountain was probably the most memorable piece of the architecture. I don't know if this marquis below was from the Utica Kallet or the one out West Genesee Street on Kasson Road in Camillus. Two shots of the Camillus Kallet from the air. Kallet also had a theater at the Dewitt Shoppingtown Mall, one of the first strip malls in Central New York opened in ... I think .. 1952.

I think the Kallets also owned the theater in Oneida at one time.

I think the Kallets also owned the theater in Oneida at one time. Yes, it's now the Kallet Civic Center. I've been there for a charity event of some sort. Short pause. I just realized the man who organized the event passed away at least 5 years ago. Time flies.

I opened the paper this morning and found that the local drive-in mentioned in the article (The Moonlight Drive-in) is up for sale. They are only asking $1,750,000.00. Now that is a real bargain. I would make an offer, but in checking my savings balances I find that I am about $1,740,000 +/- short of being able to pay cash. I guess I will stick to watching my movies on pay for view.

My apartment complex is built on drive in site. I remember going there in my teens. I think it was the NorthSide Drive in (Hudson and E Ridge Rd.) Now we get to watch drive-bys on TV news.

Chris, do you ever think, "A dreamy eyed boy kissed me even before the cartoons ended, right over there where the Dumpsters sit today."

Drive-Ins are a piece of history common to most of us 'older-timers.' I wonder if the gradual trend toward smaller, more efficient, cars played a part in the demise of outdoor theaters?
What do you think?

Probably so Kit. I can't imagine sitting through a double feature in Kia Sole, hahaha. You would have to sit in the driver's seat with you popcorn on the passenger seat, while you girlfriend sat in the back seat with HER popcorn on the other half of the rear seat, haha.

And when cars started getting smaller it was more and more difficult for BOTH of you to be in the back seat at the same time (smiley face here, please).
