You might want to consider using Malwarebytes & Spybot for scanning on a periodic basis and Zone Alarm as a firewall. You can't really count on the MS products since they aren't being updated anymore. I use Avast and am generally pleased with it but it won't catch everything. I usually download things like that from ninite.com which gives one stop shopping for a lot of utilities. If you go there you may want to consider Ccleaner for general housekeeping and Revo uninstaller (I find it does a more thorough job when you want to uninstall a program).
