Yes he did die a few years ago Chris. His shop was my ex's first stop, but then she checked out the families shop on Bleecker and one in Oneida before she settled on the dress from Mademoiselle's. I don't remember meeting his mom, but his sister was a nice lady. I didn't have that fashion search problem. I was in the Navy and wore dress blues, as did my best man. I think I DID have a short term panicky moment when I realized I hadn't brought my dress uniform shoes home, but "Uncle Louie" Phillipson solved it with a pair of shiny new Corframs. She was a beautiful bride that brought tears to my eyes when she came down the aisle and I was a 160 lb. handsome sailor, standing tall in gabardine tailor made dress blues, a full head of wavy dark hair. Makes one wonder what the hell happened, haha. Sheesh, about a 100 lb difference, thinning hair, and what's left of it is rapidly turning white, ROFL! (Okay BZ, that's your cue to jump in and ridicule me and bust my chops, lol) Did any of the rest of you ever have the pleasure of listening to Jay sing? I can almost hear his wonderful voice ringing through St John's Church in Newport NY. He was a great man and had real talent in more areas than one.

When we played up north for the colleges Donny Hale and Don Taylor and I would rent a boat go fishing in the St. Lawrence River, often without sleep. Living on baloney sandwiches probably with some worm guts here and there.

I will see if I can locate the record. It would be in storage if I still have it.

I do remember one time, when I was at massouds, and mr. jay was sitting at a table, with some friends, and it wasn't a wedding, just a typical crowded sat. night, and he was commenting on the amount of people that were there, and how very relaxed I was singing for all those people. I told him, if you love what you do, and the people show that love back, then it is no pressure at all, and you just enjoy the moment. I knew he sang in church, so when I went back to the stand, I told the guys I was going to call him up, and when I did, he was so afraid, he wouldn't sound good, with the band behind him, so I told him to sing accapella, and do whatever he wanted. I don't remember what song he sang, but I do remember the reaction of the people, when he was singing. His voice was very rich, and resonant, and they all loved it, and he was a happy man.... He was a very unique man, and we all have some great memories of him...

Utica had a good mix of music and bands. Ethnic music, Doowop, some Jazz, R&B, R&R, Country and more. I always found that the musicians had common ground no matter what they played. There were a few precious-egos but mostly good folks and good times.

Geez BZ. If a forum could register the vocals, YOU would not be known as a mute either girl, hahaha. You are right about that Richmc. One could find every genre on any given night, from heavy rock to a piano bar. From Trinkaus to the corner bars. Utica NEVER suffered for a variety of musical talent or entertainment venues.

The Alligators Donny was the drummer, Ian (granny glasses, longer hair), Les Duvall played bass and also sang, and I think the other guitar player was Dan Greenman from Syracuse. They were AWESOME!

In the 80's, Johnny and the Hot Rods was made up of John Rodzinka-guitar, Pat Crabbe-drums and Al Torchia - guitar. They played JD's in Ilion, The Office in Waterville, Arnolds to name a few. Fun times!
